Awesome tropo from across the Gulf!

Be sure to check your digital TV *and* weather band scanner, if you have one.

I want to hear more from youse.

I never thought of checking my DTV because even the local Tampa stations sometimes have trouble keeping a steady signal.

But I was really amazed by what I got because I've never had tropo like that late in the afternoon. It's always been early morning or in the evening when the sun has gone down.

I was actually looking for E Skip all day but this unexpected little tropo treat was nice.

Now that it's later in the evening, all that long distance tropo is gone and I'm only getting it from within Florida.

I'd think it would be the other way around.

An interesting and successful DXing day for sure. :)

That explains "Q 105" at 104.7 with CBS branding popping in like a local, briefly, here in Baldwin County, Alabama. That's my first FM Tampa catch.

By the time I shed myself of family obligations, it had quieted down but I did still log several strong as local New Orleans FMs, with 89.9, 93.3, WEZB, 101.9 and 105.3 all decoding for a length of time in HD. Also got TIX and Bayou clearly but no HD. 94.3 is a good frequency for me to check because it's first adjacent to a 100 kW station right in my back yard.

I'm in Farmersville, Texas (about 30 miles northeast of Dallas), and I have been picking up tons of signals tonight, mostly from Louisiana. Most of the Tyler and Texarkana stations like KNUE 101.5 and KOOI 106.5 usually make it over here with no problem, and so do some Shreveport stations from time to time, but tonight they were coming in even better than usual. I was able to null out KEGL long enough to get a short hit of Country Legends 97.1 out of Houston (lots of static but a steady stereo signal), KTDY 99.9 Lafayette, LA, and a new record for me, KVDU Voodoo 104.1 New Orleans (both blasting in like locals!). Very interesting conditions. I wonder if anyone from southern Louisiana or Texas can pick up Dallas area stations?

Speaking of Dallas.....I just bagged KERA DT14 (shows on screen as 13) at 9:15 ET this morning! I'm near Miami!! I plan to do YouTube tomorrow of it.

I'm jealous of the Gulf of Mexico DXers... The longest tropo catch I've had in Kansas was 597 miles (to Kentucky), and that was a rare day indeed, nearly 15 years ago.

Regarding DTV, on the switchover date, I read there was tropo in the Gulf region which caused TVs to save the distant signals by accident, instead of the local stations.

Wow, that has yet to happen to me, in the case of full power local stations. The closest to that was about 18 months ago when my semi local WXEL DT 27 (virtual 42) in West Palm Beach was briefly overridden by WRDQ Orlando.

Usually when a station is beating up on a local, all I get is "no bar" or absence of signal, when it would have to be a case of two stations headbutting.

I live in a near-dead zone for TV reception... I can't even receive the station I work for on a consistent basis, and I live about six miles from the tower. So I have not logged any DTV e-skip or tropo. But I think the tropo on the switchover date was in Texas/Louisiana. I can't find any corresponding posts or articles, unfortunately.

Great job cd! Dallas must be over 1k miles from you in S FL.

Farthest tropo in "RottenDX Town"-KDUK 104.7 Florence, OR, 250 miles S.

Dallas is not as far from me as San Antonio (KENS DT on Apr 27)....but I'll take it, for sure. I am sure that there is more land to cross from the Gulf to Dallas than to San Antonio.

It sure doesn't hurt that there are not many DT 14's close to me. The only one I received prior was WPDS LD in St. Pete---and I am sure that when I saw a yellow bar on 14, that's what I'd be getting!

I am happy to say that I was wrong. A shock, to be sure!

Right after KERA & WLOX Biloxi, E-skip was in. I yielded to the E-skip. I'm pooped.
