97.1 is making a big deal about a guy who had generally lousy ratings over two separate tours of duty at 100.5.

Maybe he'll be a better fit at 97.1.

Time will tell.

Am I alone in thinking 99X is largely responsible for the recent dip in 97.1's ratings?

Hard to say when the ratings reflect only 1 month. Sometimes 1 month can be fluky. It's possible some fans of Steve Craig followed him to 99X but at this point, it's hard to say.

I don't think Rock 100.5's relatively poor ratings had anything to do with Axel's on-air performance. I listened to him this morning, and he sounds fine. IMHO, the music is what primarily determines The River's ratings, and personalities such as Kaedy Kiely and Axel are icing on the cake.

Either Axel is no longer PD or he's PD in name only:

Mr. Reed did a very good job with Club 93.7 in Flint. I believe he helped launch that station. That had to have been about 20 years ago!

It is unusual for morning talent at a major market station to also be the PD, so this move is not terribly surprising.

Axel was never PD of WSRV. Look at the link to my story from October linked by @pjc1961 a couple posts up. He was hired as Assistant Director of Branding and Programming at the time underneath Emily Boldon and now Nathan Reed.

How many titles does a station need? Director of what?
It's one of many titles that Program Director as been modified to with all of the additional platforms in existence besides the radio signal. Cox uses "Director of Branding and Programming" to state that the person leads all of the station's brands. Some companies use "Brand Manager". Townsquare uses "Content Director".

Makes more sense now; thanks.

The original text abstract said "program director and morning host," but you are correct that the full article stated he was hired as APD and not PD. Pjc1961 also mentioned the APD title. I should've read the earlier content more closely; sorry about that.
