Axilliary Antenna for KFNC & KIOL

The FCC granted Cumulus Licensing an Auxilliary Antenna for KFNC 97.5 on November 29th, 2005 and KIOL 103.7 on November 22nd, 2005.

Both stations will be using an existing tower in Baytown at 4605 West Baker Road approximately 100 meters west of the corner of Decker Drive and less than one kilometer from the existing KWWJ 1360 array.

KFNC will operate with 4kW at either 152 meters HAAT {FCC Authorization} or 156 meters HAAT {Cumulus specifications}. The 60dbu {1mV/m} contour of the auxilliary station will touch the existing 60dbu contour of the main station near the Baytown-East Freeway and the Eastex Freeway.

KIOL will operate with 10kW at either 152 meters HAAT {FCC Authorization} or 156 meters HAAT {Cumulus specifications}. The 60dbu {1mV/m} contour of the auxilliary station will touch the existing 60dbu contour of the main station at approximately TX288 {The South Freeway} and The South Loop.

Both stations have the usual three years to have the auxilliary stations on line, although since it is an existing tower I expect that the stations will be ready to go in a short time span.

I keep wondering if the stations would not be a good idea for use as booster stations. I realize that it does not extend the coverage of the station, but it may enhance the existing signal and lessen the numerous drop outs that both stations have.

Yesterday I drove up to Cypress and had KIOL on and the station continuely dropped out from the Galleria area all the way to Cypress. In fact along Jones Road KIOL had a signal that was on par with the Missouri City stick stations when I get to about Centerville or Buffalo on I-45 heading for Dallas, maybe even worse. There was no interference from any other station, just a terrible signal coming in that area from KIOL.

Any improvement in the signal would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure about this, but are the stations allowed to run the auxillary antennas at the same time as the main stick? With an aux. at 288 and 610, even at 10,000 watts, it seems that the signal would be vastly improved.

No...the aux stick may only be run in case the main cannot be used or because of maintanence of the main OR periodic testing. I ran my AUXs on weekends at times to make sure it ran ok...and had to run it on one FM while the MAIN antenna was being replaced...if I had gone past 30days, I would have had to notify the FCC but we made it under the wire.

The aux for KIOL and KFNC cannot be at 288 and 610. WHY? The 1mV contour of the AUX cannot exceed the 1mV of the MAIN in any direction thus there cannot be an improvement of the signal over the MAIN.
