AZ-TV going dark in Phoenix metro area

AZ-TV has been announcing via screen crawl and on their website that over-the-air viewers in the Phoenix metro area will not be able to receive AZ-TV beginning Mon. Dec. 7th while they switch KAZT-CA from channel 27 to channel 36 and upgrade their antenna. The station is scheduled to return to air on Thurs. Dec. 10th.

The outage will only affect over-the-air viewers of KAZT-CA in the Phoenix metro area. Cable and satellite subscribers will continue to receive AZ-TV as will over-the-air viewers in other parts of the state, except central Pinal County. At last check, AZ-TV's Casa Grande translator, K43CO, was still dark. It is unknown when that translator will return to air.

The move from channel 27 to channel 36 should eliminate interference caused by full-power KUTP, which broadcasts a 1000 kW signal on channel 26. KFPH-CA's analog signal on channel 35 (and proposed flash cut digital signal) will not cause such interference, being a low-power signal.

Thanks for the update dhett. I saw the earlier notification but have not seen the screen crawl since I decided it was more important to receive the VHF's than RF27 (couldn't seem to get all of them on one antenna).

And incidentally, there was another thread on the board that suggested adjacent channels wouldn't be a problem any longer thanks to digital. I realize this example is an LP with an adjacent blowtorch but doesn't this give legs to the theory that adjacent channels can still be an issue?

Adjacent channels are only an issue when there's a huge disparity in power levels. If the KAZT-27 signal was at 1000 kW like KUTP-26, there would be no problem. In fact, the FCC's interference predictions do take this into account, but a station like KAZT-CA can agree to accept interference from KUTP if they want to.

I'm still convinced that the station could have saved thousands of $$$ and just replaced their transmitting antenna for 27, and that would have probably solved the issue. Look at KPHE-LD on 16 for example, they're sandwiched in between two full-power DTV's, and they don't seem to have as many issues that KAZT-CA does with only one adjacent full-power.

Don't forget, KPHO-DT over-the-air viewers may have issues this week since KAZT-CA is on their tower.

AZ-TV website now says they will be back on the air on Saturday December 12th.

Just saw it too. I was pretty sure that Monday night's windstorm would delay the return of OTA broadcasts.

As of 8:30pm Saturday night, KAZT-CA has returned to the air on RF 36.

So how's the signal?

Been checking it on two of my three converter boxes (1 indoor VHF ears, 1 outdoor combo antenna) since Saturday afternoon and the signal varies between 80-100% consistently. That's good enough for an occasional audio drop-out. No video artifacts noted.
