ANOTHER RECORD YEAR!
AZ-TV Gains 25% In Prime As Competitors Fall; Frasier Strong In May

AZ-TV (KAZT, Channel 7/Cable 13) finshed the 2007-2008 television season with a primetime household audience 25% higher than the year before.

Apart from KUTP’s 6% gain, and CW6, which was flat, all other English-language Phoenix television stations lost between 13% and 23% of their audience in the season (September 10, 2007-May 21, 2008) just ended.

In the May, 2008 sweeps, AZ-TV’s top performer was Frasier, which enjoyed a 20% increase in viewers from 9:00 to 10:00 PM, beating Malcolm In the Middle and King Of The Hill on KUTP and Drew Carey on KPPX in all key demos and tying Two And A Half Men and King Of Queens on KTVK in Women 18-49.

AZ-TV is Arizona’s only locally-owned television station, a division of Londen Media Group. Since its launch in April, 2002, AZ-TV has led the way in classic and contemporary comedy, regional sports (the NHL Phoenix Coyotes) and local talk and public affairs programs, reaching more than 1.8 million households over the air, on cable and on DIRECTV and Dish Network satellite, as well as a global audience online at www.arizonasown.com. KAZT-DT 7.2 launches in 2008 with programming from RTN-The Retro Television Network.

these AZTV posts crack me up... what a bunch of crap. how about the real numbers in key demo's, rather than just percentage increases from the last place station in the market. I hate to kick the lowest rated station in the market, but do you really think anyone is buying into this? If your prime ratings were so impressive (+25%) as you state, how do you rank compared to all broadcast stations? This is how cable is sold... all smoke and mirrors, with no substance. what a joke.

somebody really needs to check these numbers. I spot checked one demo, A18-49, and AZTV M-Sun Prime was not up at all, and posted a .1 rating. next closest to the bottom was KTVK with a .6 in this demo. All other broadcast stations had above 1.0 rating. I also checked the claim at 9pm, and you guessed it, wrong again. AZTV is dead last with a .4 rating. Seriously, if you are going to make these bold claims, at least make sure they are accurate.

phxnwswatcher:

Nielsen and Arbitron aren't happy with posting of raw numbers on these boards, so I don't.

We're #8 in a market with 9 English-language commercial stations rated by Nielsen (KTVK, KPHO, KSAZ, KPNX, KNXV, KUTP, KPPX, KASW and KAZT). We beat KPPX.

Here's the market ranking for households in primetime (7-10PM) weeknights for the 2007-2008 season. I can't post raw numbers (you could call or e-mail me), but I'll show the spread between stations, based on rating points:

1. FOX10
2. KPNX (0.2 behind FOX10)
2. CBS5 (tied with KPNX)
4. ABC15 (1.1 behind KPNX and CBS5)
5. KTVK (1.9 behind ABC15)
6. CW6 (1.0 behind KTVK)
7. My45 (0.3 behind CW6)
8. AZ-TV (0.6 behind My45)
9. ion51 (0.6 behind AZ-TV)

Compared to the 2006-2007 season for for households in primetime (7-10PM) weeknights, FOX10 is down 16.4%, KPNX is down 13.2%, CBS5 is down 23.3%, ABC15 is down 15.7%, KTVK is down 21.6%, CW6 is flat, My45 is up 6.6%, ion51 is down 33%....and AZ-TV is up 25%.

In this environment, any increase is an accomplishment. Two of nine stations did that. My45 increased by 6.6%. AZ-TV went up 25%.

As for the Frasier claim, it's the 9-10PM weeknight hour among Women 18-49 in the May 2008 sweeps. Here's that ranking:

1. KPNX: NBC Network Prime
2. CBS5: CBS Network Prime (0.7 behind KPNX)
3. FOX10: FOX10 News at 9 (0.5 behind CBS5)
4. ABC15: ABC Network Prime (1.5 behind FOX10)
5. CW6: Friends/Scrubs (0.5 behind ABC15)
6. AZ-TV: Frasier (0.6 behind CW6)
6. KTVK: Two And A Half Men/King Of Queens (tied with AZ-TV)
8. My45: Malcolm In The Middle/King Of The Hill (0.1 behind AZ-TV and KTVK)
9. ion51: Drew Carey (0.2 behind My45)

We are the little guy. We've never pretended to be anything else. That, in fact, is what makes our continued progress over the past four and a half years so remarkable.

If you ever have any question about anything I post, my direct line and e-mail adress are on every single news release.

Meanwhile, on the Spanish ranch...

I understand that the Phoenix Univision station finished the May sweeps #1 in primetime among all adults 18-49 (live and same-day DVR).

Also, it appears KMEX-TV in LA is now the #1 station in all of the U.S. among adults 18-49.
