B-101 to do the music test again tomorrow

September 20th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm EDT, we will briefly suspend our usual programming for a very special music test. We’re going to test hundreds of songs to let you vote online which songs are keepers and which have to go.

We’ll go through the whole library and even lots of songs we don’t play yet so you can vote on them all.

It’s Philadelphia’s second ever live on-air music test where everybody can vote. When it’s done, we’ll become the new FRESH music B101! So please mark you calendars and try to join us tomorrow.
From: http://www3.b101radio.com/ I'm guessing that something went wrong to cause the station to do this again. Any idea posters as to what happened here?

No, they are sampling a different daypart (and potentially different audience).

I had heard that there was a problem on their website. You could vote on the songs, but there was no way to enter the vote. No "enter" or "submit" button, so anyone who took the survey wasted their time. Someone at B101 dropped the ball.

That's a pretty good clue that this was never supposed to be a real test in the first place. The idea is make the listeners feel important by telling them they're taking a test, and expose them to two hours of samples of the music so that they tell themselves "Wow, they play a lot of great songs!" and make a mental note to listen more often. Essentially converting them into P-1s because they think they have a stake in the station. The whole thing is a put on.

The crowd here is reading way too much into this little stunt. Anyone can cite some anecdotal examples of people who might turn it off for the rest of the afternoon, but do you really think that many won’t come back that they’ll suffer? They didn’t get to where they are by chance—a couple of two hour blocks that get some listeners to think they’re picking the music has about as much upside potential as downside risk.

Reason why B-101 WBEB is doing the music test again tomorrow

From B-101 website:
On September 18th, B101 had Philadelphia's first ever on-air Music Poll. Thank you for all of your votes on the songs we play.

Since the Poll we have been flooded with call from listeners who couldn't participate, so we are doing it again!

Thanks to help from YOU, our valued listeners, we have always been able to put together a great playlist of songs.

Once again we are asking for your feedback. We want our music not only to be the BEST but the FRESHEST!

I was one of those idiots who listened for two hours, did the vote online and you're right--there was no way to "submit" your vote...no "ENTER" button whatsoever...a waste of two hours. So, who knows what happened. I've heard the new "FRESH" moniker debuts Monday...but again, "who knows"?

Would this mean that even after the another music test, will it really announce that the "Fresh" format will debut on Monday when the new PD steps in?

Agreed. A real test would be done in a more scientific fashion. I maintain that this stunt is a waste of time for B101 and will do nothing to help their cause. It just makes 2 hours of programming unlistenable to much of the audience.

Will they be back? Probably. But, why waste the time, effort and money on this? It just sounds amateurish.

I would liken B101's "music test" to what AM 1340 did prior to the launch of "Skin Radio", but in short form.

Wrong again guys and misinformed! The test is legit! Everytime you voted the button had a color right? Yes! So every voted was immediately counted! NO send button because if someone made a mistake and then hit the back button everything would not be counted! PLease most of you have no clue. Stop with all this crap.

Oh and how do I know? I know!

B101 Webmaster: found.

I figured this was the case as they were using .asp. Each button was it's own individual submit button, each song was it's own form. They just didn't redirect you to a new page after you clicked, that's all.

Also, how many people are honestly going to finish the entire survey? Heck, I was genuinely interested in this and had to turn it off after a page because it was so mind-numbingly rote. If they depended on folks to finish the entire survey and then mash one big "submit" button, they wouldn't have had hardly any final results to go on.

And yeah, Doc, there are plenty of people on here who have no clue what they're talking about. Welcome to the Radio-info message boards.

I did the whole thing in about 20 minutes....voting against every darned disco, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston song they put on the list.

I did this too, but I didn't want to brag about it to our new friend here lest he do a search for every user that voted "never" on everything and discount their results.

I've never trolled an on-air music test before. It was refreshing.

WWRJD? (What Would RJ Do?)

Just got to listen to B101 this afternoon through the online stream noticed that from now on the voiceover ID's the song whenever the song ends before cuts to the sweeper or another song starts.

I have to give B101 credit because they are the only station that is independently owned and was very smart to ID the song when it fades out(i.e. Kelly Clarkson - Since You've Been Gone). Now the station has gotten "Fresh", there are more new things to come for this station.

To be fair, I didn’t just vote never on certain songs…I did pick sometimes/frequent for many of the songs I genuinely like. It just so happens none of them are disco (sorry, RJ). If they actually played my list, they’d have Ben FM Junior on 101.

I noticed that announcement thing this morning--kind of interesting.
