B-103 MIXING IN THE 80'S

Yesterday they played "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by the Eurythmics ('83) and Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love" ('85) this evening. Funny thing about that is both songs were preceded by liners that said "playing the fun hits of the 60's & 70's...here's another one now!" LOL!

They have another liner,"heres another song from the 60's and 70's you can sing along with" and then comes 80's"Walking on Sunshine". The place is automated in such an absent minded fashion. Same goes for the AM too.

Considering that the only 80's fare they offered previously was from homegrown talent (i.e. Billy Joel's "For The Longest Time"), I think it's significant. Their numbers have dipped since the return of WCBS-FM (although not as bad as WALK), and they needed to be somewhat proactive in their programming..."playing the fun hits of the 60's, 70's and the 80's, too...here's another one now!"

I worked for Clear Channel during the Randy Michaels era. He was notorious for flying his private plane into markets for a few hours ... unannounced... to listen to his stations. (Using 20/20 hindsight, had he spent the money to have his big stations stream back then, he could've saved a ton of time and money, but I digress.)

One of his MAJOR pet peeves was liners that talked about a specific brand image, followed by a song that either contradicted the liner, or didn't enforce it. He'd call PDs at home... at any time... and blast them for it. To my recollection, he never called a PD at home more than once. Know what I mean?

Love him or hate him, Randy is an absolute genius, and Clear Channel didn't start totally sucking until he left.

Which brings me to my all-time favorite Randy quote: "I don't know why we call them listeners, because they don't.

Pretty clear that Mr. Michaels doesn't work for Barnstable Broadcasting. The station runs Joe Johnson's "Beatles Brunch" on Sunday mornings. Last year, I noticed that they were running a station promo for their annual Super Bowl Party, which had already passed. Obviously, the promo didn't have a "kill" date attached to it or else it would have been addressed. I called/e-mailed the station to make them aware of this oversight. Do you know that promo ran for 3 more weeks before they finally switched it out? You see, listeners DO listen. It's always been my contention that people who manage radio stations are the ones who don't listen to radio!

I was listening to the "LIVE" TOH CNN news one afternoon on WHLI on the day the baseball hall of fame entrants were announced. All the other stations had read the names and WHLI played a stale "LIVE" CNN report that the names wolud be announced shortly. I wonder how long Jack Spector was dead before anyone noticed???
