B-105.7 Indianapolis

I just recently came across B-105.7 in Indianapolis. They are truly a gold-based AC station. They've been doing an all-80s weekend and sound really good. I'm often critical of AC's that lean older, but this station leans so much older that it actually sounds good. You can see their playlist here http://www.b1057.com/broadcasthistory.aspx

This station even plays 60s music like The Grass Roots and The Foundations, and plays interesting 70s music like Steve Miller Band and Supertramp - almost closer to classic hits than AC. No currents. The music flows well, something rare on AC these days. The strategy is interesting, I guess they are trying to snag the mainstream classic hits audience that may not like the lack of pop and the edgier stuff on WJJK. Good job, B-105.7!

That sounds like a pretty good station based on the portion of their playlist I just looked at. I have a feeling it's similar to what Soft Rock 105.1 in Detroit was doing until they recently started adding more current pop to their playlist.

The last time I passed through the Indianapolis area, I listened to this station a bit, but in general I've been listening to lots of CHR lately.

I was surprised to see them play some stuff like "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone, "Long Train Running" by the Doobies, "Jackie Blue" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, "Think I'm In Love" by Eddie Money, etc. More AC's that want to lean older should sound like this. By keeping the recent material to a minimum, the station doesn't sound as "messy" as going from One Direction in to Gloria Gaynor!

I'm not listening to much AC these days, either. CHR has been so good lately that I listen to it, Hot AC, or Classic Hits for something older most of the time. Mainstream AC has just gotten boring.

They started as a soft 70s based AC that also played currents, but when the AC product dried up they pulled way back on the current music. 3 years ago their ac competitor left the format as did the local oldies station, making them the default pop oldies station as well as the defualt "soft" station, even though they're really not so soft anymore. At one point it seemed a lot of stations wanted to do the AC format. That doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

The older lean must work for them as the numbers look pretty good. "Mainstream" AC hasn't been on fire in a lot of midwestern markets lately, but classic hits is, so the direction they're taking makes sense. Indy has a lot of adult pop stations so mainstream AC may not do as well. With i-94 as Hot AC, WZPL as Adult CHR/Hot AC, and My 107.9 as somewhat of a pop variety hits in the adult pop area, then WJJK as rock classic hits, I think 105.7 is positioned nicely. A more modern/mainstream lean probably would not be as successful.
