80's not oldies? I disagree.
In the mid 70's we harkenedback to the 50's with a kidney punch from American Grafitti that swirled into Happy Days. In the 80's The Big Chill brought back the love of 60's Motown Music. In the 90's we saw the beginnings of the Jammin' Oldies 70's disco hybrid format. As a rule, 20 years back is an oldies format. There is no reason that in 2007, 80's music can not be considered some form of "oldies" music.
I talked to Robb Case a bit this wekend about the whole 80's debate. I really believe that the music, played strategically on a station that was formatted well could OWN the 35-54 female listener and where momma goes, the family follows. I could type a few volumes on this thought process, but momma wants me to get in the van and get to church and what momma wants...
