I just dont agree with you Glenn. A website is always an add on. Its a throw in for radio. If you can tell me of a website that makes any kind of cash for the station please do. I understand its "cool" for DJs to talk about. Websites are a promotional tool no more and the revenue you say can be brought in is only a tiny part of sales EVER at any station.(I know you were a DJ and not in sales and might not of known) I noticed that the hot site was still up long after the station was dark and all the staff was gone.
I also dont follow the whole "update every day" thing and "repeat the hits" What? Why? According to who? If anything you would want to present a constant rocksteady image. For me it goes to the basic why do people go to a website?
Wow, a DJ, huh? Not a high opinion of the hard working on air staff mmbers!! Any OM, PD or air talent knows that creating opportunity for sales, both traditional and non-traditional (i.e., website, etc) is an important part of the job. Feel free to not agree with me (and most every other PD in radio), but please don't question my credentials when it comes to this subject.
Anyway, you are right, a website is always an add on when your sales staff is inept...and the website is nothing more than a promotional tool when you allow it to be! A good programmer knows a website can be an important programming tool as it is the visual extension of your brand. Yes, a website should present a "rocksteady" image that is consistant (just like your station should be consistant everytime someone cumes your station), but it also needs to be consistant with who you are (or trying to be) on the air.
Perfect example, a majority of the artists on the main page of the B94.5 website have CURRENT hits...G's website, one or two currents and maybe some recurrent artists. This may seem minor, but in this point and click world, image is important...especailly with the demo in qustion.
As for daily updates and repeat hits...why wouldn't you want that? You want repeat cume, right? Why wouldn't you want people to constantly be in touch with your radio station, either on the air or in cyber space??? The more hits, the higher the value for the sales staff...even if it is minimal, it is revenue.
You are right about the Hot site being up for a week and a half after the format was pulled...your point is? That was a station that wasn't on the air anymore...a little different than a station that is trying to win in the here and now.
