B 96 plays Natasha Beddingfield

Obviously not a hip-hop record. Maybe an April Fool's Joke?

Anyhow it just sounded misplaced after the monikor right before 10am. Chicago's Hits and Hip-Hop. And now onto the #2 Pop song in the country. "Unwritten"

No you are not right.

They add pop songs late in the game so they can recieve credit from the record labels as spinning them.
______________

The song is a HIT! Why SHOULDN'T they be playing it?
______________

I think the point is, they were stating why it was added so late in the game.
______________

By logic Rob, the song is out of place but the positioner covers it however the perception on the street is B96 is more of a a hip hop/rap station.

Natasha's record is a late add for you guys but it's OK, people who know how it operates over there know they always come late on white based hits.

I don't think it's their salvation though.

I'm going to say that Natasha Bedingfield fits just fine and its better that they are playing it now then not playing it.

At WXSS in Milwaukee (Mainstream CHR), they usually wait until its Top-10 until they add non rhythmic songs.

"Hits & Hip Hop" The Natasha Bedingfield song has rhythm as it is a pop song. So it fits their "Rhythmic CHR" format. Thus them playing it does not suprise me. Back in 2002 when they were throwing on Goo Goo Dolls - Iris as a gold and mixing in Nickelback, Linkin Park, etc that got me thinking. Let me know when they start playing James Blunt or All-American Rejects as I don't listen that often anymore.

Other stations like KUBE in Seattle uses "Seattle's #1 Hit Music Station" and is full blown Hip Hop/R&B/Rap/etc.

So if you look at it and compare, at makes at least some sense.
______________

Let me offer a bit more explanation:

B 96 is notorious for waiting until long after this song becomes a big hit on the Top 40 chart to add it. Why wait until a song becomes a hit? How about make the hit?

Also, which really annoys me, they refuse to play "These Words" by Natasha Beddingfield which A: was a huge Top 10 hit, and B: is more rhythmic in my mind than "Unwritten."

Same thing happened to Kelly Clarkson. Why play "Because of You" when you never thought of playing "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes"?

My point is if you are gonna call yourself playing Hits and Hip-Hop, play all the top hits that, not pick and choose.

Why isn't B 96 playing "Walk Away" by Kelly Clarkson yet? You have a Kelly Clarkson promotion weekend 2 months ago, but refuse to play her current Top 10 hit? I don't get it.

Also, where is the Pussycat Dolls and "Beep"? I thought they were a big B 96 artist? Guess not!

Re: B 96 plays.../Oakenfold on Nine...

B96 has been doing this sort of thing for over 15 years. Get over it. Until they change formats and/or programming staff, I figure it will continue.

As far as Oaky on Nine-FM: It's completely insane. But then again - they "play anything".

They could have had Frankie Hollywood Rodriguez - who is locally recognized and can get ratings for them - but the management over @ Nine-FM keep jerking him around. Again, a change of some sort is needed over there to aim that ship in the right direction.
______________

Rather than complain, I think that everyone should be happy that you have two legendary PDs at the reigns of both TOP 40 CHRs. Appreciate the fact that, most likely, we as listeners, will all benefit. Negativity can cause heart attacks and strokes. Let's be positive on this rainy day in Chi Town. ;)

None.I figure they'll start runnin' Hee Haw reruns too. Poor Matt. No rhyme or reason to what happens there.

Now, if it's a test to see what the response is and it causes them to have a vision that a mainstream dance format might actually attract listeners and revenue then...

MLII:

Can you add a little more insight as to WHAT can be played on such a mainstream dance station? You've alluded to this many, many times without an elaborate explaination. I'd love to hear what you have in mind. Let's just keep a covert eye open for David. LOL!
______________

What possible benefit is there in "receiving credit" from the record ducks?

For a station to add a record and make it an A rotation when it peaks nationally and have it fade suddenly few weeks later, has their reasons.

You have been in the industry long enough, you well know the manuvering, and limitations of record labels in relation to dealing with media outlets. Seems like you took the word "Credit" in the wrong sense.
______________

B96 has been that way for years. They will add a pop song late. They are the polar opposite of a smaller market CHR that tries to stay as pop as possible and will only add urban crossovers when they become huge national hits.

ZERO? Hey, I know how to turn on the radio.)

I think your problem is you have been laying your head on the transmitters transmission line and causing the SWR to rise!
______________

I certainly can see none. Stations use call out and other kinds of active research to determine current rotations, not the incessant whining of record ducks, who only know how to say, "play my record." Most of us ignore them as much as we can.

I know that we avoid seeing record ducks as much as possible, and most of our stations have a couple of hours one day a week to see them all. Otherwise, it is "leave the stuff in the lobby and go away."

One major, major LA station's former MD had a phone message that said, "You have reached xxx xxx, Music Direcotr of Power 106. If you are promoting a record, you can hang up now."
