B-97.5 question

I was listening to the "Flashback Weekend" earlier (which is very good by the way) and something caught me by surprise. During Huey Lewis "Heart of Rock & Roll" at the end after he shouts all the cities (...Cleveland, Detroit) he then sang Knoxville! I've heard that when this song was on the charts, Huey sang a few customized versions for various markets. For those who have lived here long enough to remember, was this Knoxville version played here when the song was new? I'm assuming WOKI was the CHR back then that would have played it. And if it is original, how would B-97.5 actually have a great sounding copy of it nearly 30 years later?
 
I've lived in Knoxville my entire life and definitely remember the customized version with Knoxville back when it was on the charts. Every time I've heard that song since, I wait to hear if it's included and I've yet to hear it until recently on Flashback Weekend.

On a similar topic, why is it that the spoken DJ parts were removed from most recent plays of "We Built This City" by Starship? It sounds awkward without it.
 
I remember this too. WIMZ also played the "Knoxville" version. As for "We Built This City" I also remember a WIMZ version that had their jocks in the middle.

That's the radio edit. The purpose of removing the DJ chatter from the album version was of course so that stations could add their own DJ to the song. So the station you're hearing it on is simply playing the radio edit without adding anything to it. In fact I've heard them play it like that on 105.7 The Hog lately.

It was, in fact, on 105.7 the Hog. And, I've heard it without the DJ chatter on iHeartRadio's "My 80's" channel.
 
WOKI was the only station in the area who even had a copy of that edit. It would not have been heard on WIMZ at the time anyway, as Kerry did was trying to stay right in the middle between actual rock and actual CHR. Lots of Rod Stewart.

Which song are you refering to hear because I remember hearing "The Heart of Rock'n'Roll'' with "Knoxville" added on WIMZ. I very rarely listened to WOKI back in the early to mid 80s because I hated the Hits100 concept and hearing the same songs over and over every couple of hours. As far as "We Built This City", I hated that song and always turned the radio either off or to another station whenever that song came on.
 
I was talking about WIMZ. They did not have the "Knoxville" edit, nor would they have even played any Huey Lewis records during that period of time.
 
I beg to differ with you on that one, During their ill-fated "Rock of the 80's" format in the early 80's I remember hearing A Flock of Seagulls, Huey Lewis/news, Micheal Jackson amung others.

I remember hearing Deniece Williams "Let's Hear It for the Boy" on the WIMZ morning show. Phil Williams talked about how the little girls in his neighborhood sang it while they skipped rope or something.

Kerry Lambert was still there wasn't he? At least that wasn't as bad as when he was made to take WKGN from AOR to Disco.
 
Madonna, Kool and the Gang, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love", Culture Club, Michael Jackson and Prince WERE ALL regulars in WIMZ's playlist and rotation during this time period. In fact, very little Rock and Roll was being played at the time on WIMZ. When Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" came out in 1985, it was almost 3 months after it release before WIMZ played one song from it. And this was during the time when Scott Paulsen was the afternoon drive jock. In fact, I think every song that was released as a single from the "Footloose" Soundtrack was played on WIMZ during this time period.
 
Thanks jwk1979 for refreshing my memory. I remember a bit that Scott did with heart of R&R, they were still on LP's at the time and when tht song ended he turned off the turntable and the heart beats at the end slowed down and he smacked his hands a few times and said "BREATHE, BREATHE", and he then turned on the turntable and the heartbeat sped back up finished the track.
Creative radio, I sure miss it.
 
I also remember hearing that music (especially the Knoxville version of "Heart of Rock & Roll") on WIMZ. I did not listen to WOKI.
