B101 Panders To EVERYbody While Saying NOthing

While dining in a 1/2 Michelin star restaurant at 7:30 this morning (Chez IHOP, if you must know), my dining companions and I were treated to an hour up-close-and-personal of B101 played for the entertainment of the assembled motley munchfesters. I haven't listened to Der Bee since...who knows? I hadn't realized how all over the place they had become musically...and how BOring they had become verbally, either.

They played Styx/"Sail Away" (long version) into a Ricky Martin/Enrique Iglesias Spanglish piece into George Michael/"Careless Whisper" into a Madonna disco tune (not even one of her biggies) into a Country tune I didn't recognize into some Alternative piece of fluff. The only thing we didn't hear was anything even remotely approaching R&B or a tune with "soul". As for the DJ and the positioners, all that was said by either was "five-in-a-row"...over and over and over.

I know they do well in the ratings, but, DAMN are they all over the place musically and BOring verbally to boot. I wish I knew why they do so well while other stations that sound better don't.

Weigh in, please.

I'm not sure if this is a legit "excuse" or not but I think they go on automatic pilot on the weekends. Their core audience a ratings power comes from their "at work" crowd. B is a very safe station to listen to at work, and they cater to that, concentrating on their weekday audience. They probably assume that the regular listeners are too busy on the weekends to listen for an extended period of time, and they slack off, phone it in, or insert your own pun here. IMHO!

I think that used to be called block-programming...different formatics and content in different parts of the broadcast day or week. You may be on to something when you sugest that their meat and potatoes revenue comes from the Monday-Friday workweek. Weekends may just be wide open for experimentation or trying to cume younger demos to balance their weekday demos.

Speaking musically, seems pretty mainstream AC to me...Vogue was indeed one of her "biggies" and Stevie Nicks as country probably insults the fans of MGK AND XTU...unless you were speaking of LeAnn Rimes, which was number 1 at AC and top 5 pop. (I'm not saying I personally love these songs, but I wouldn't say this is straying from the AC formula OR B's standard weekday programming.)

WBEB-FM 7:26 AM ANTHONY, MARC I Need To Know 1999
WBEB-FM 7:29 AM TRAIN Drops Of Jupiter 2001
WBEB-FM 7:33 AM MADONNA Vogue 1990
WBEB-FM 7:37 AM NICKS, STEVIE Edge Of Seventeen 1982
WBEB-FM 7:43 AM BREAK Commercials And/Or Recorded Promos
WBEB-FM 7:46 AM CLARKSON, KELLY Because Of You 2004
WBEB-FM 7:50 AM HUMAN LEAGUE Don't You Want Me 1981
WBEB-FM 7:54 AM RIMES, LEANN How Do I Live 1997
WBEB-FM 7:58 AM UNCLE KRACKER Follow Me

Ahh, yes. "Vogue"... One of the lesser-known hits of the "disco" era. LOL. When did Madonna release that, around 1978?

No. Madonna released "Vogue" around 1990.

1978? Madonna did not even exist as a singer, thus she did not become famous until 1984, when I believe her first single "Holiday" was released in 1983(the year I was born).

Are you joking? Because I was!

By the way, she's coming to the Wachovia Center on July 12.
