B101 Reception in South County

I was recently in Narragansett, and I am not impressed with B101's signal there. Even on a good car radio, B101 fades in many areas. The signal is as bad there as Hot 106's signal. In fact, Cool 102's signal was slightly better there.

I know that South County isn't exactly a big population center. But it is an important part of the state. It is a shame that CC downgraded the signal.

Bad signal

It is one of the few areas in the state where there is a population increase. With the downgrade, B-101 cannot even cover the area it is licensed to serve. B-101 will lose cume and shares, and they should.

I visited RI from Boston a couple weeks ago. Before I could get B101 in pretty clearly from the 128 split in Canton all the way through RI, but this time did not get a clear signal from B101 until after passing 495. It kept pretty good until Exeter but I didn't drive farther than that. 101.7 the Bull, on the other hand, held on until the Attleboro area, much farther than it did in the past.

Given the pictures I've seen of B101's new antenna, it seems like they just threw it on top of the Hospital Trust building without giving it much thought. In my opinion, I think a better solution would have been to put it on either WPRO-FM or WWLI's tower and downgrading to a B1. At least they would still put out a decent signal to the southern part of the state.

Jacko

The signal does decently until about the URI Bay Campus. South of there - especially near the Town Beach in Narrragansett, as well as downtown Wakefield - the signal is spotty. I can only imagine how bad the signal must be in Westerly.

Could B101 have gone on the WVEI tower? Might not have required such a drastic downgrade in signal.

A move to Exeter would put you prohibitively close to WKCI Hamden, CT. The drop in power to protect WKCI then puts your strongest signal further away from your largest population center, Providence.

Good point. I didn't consider WKCI. Speaking of the Exeter tower, I remember reading a while back about WWRX/Jammin 107.7 wanting to move to that tower. Did anything ever develop regarding that?

2 down; 2 to go

Now that B 101's signal does not even cover the state and Southeastern MA, I Heart has effectively dismantled two of its Providence properties. WWBB and WHJJ are now irrelevant. Now they have to get to work making HJY and Coast irrelevant as well. Why not reduce their signals to protect Hartford and Springfield signals?

B101 has certainly seen better days. Of all the stations I've worked for, it was arguably my most favorite. I have many many wonderful memories of that station. Fast forward to today and the oldies are gone, a lot of big name personalities are gone, and now the signal is gone. Why not just put the damn thing out of its misery?
