B103, 94X, 'HLI, KJOY SOLD!!!

Connoisseur Communications has brought the 4 LI stations from Barnstable.

My predictions.....

-B103 stays the same.
-94X is burnt toast, flip by Labor Day.
-KJOY begins simulcasting on 94.3
-If KJOY does not simulcast, what about "Bob FM"!

Thought? Comments? Critique?

The 4 stations being sold are part of the Long Island Radio Group.

WHLI-AM-1100 Adult Standards
WIGX-FM-94.3 "94X" Adult Hits (?) ("Hits of Generation X" - 1986-2006 approximately)
WKJY-FM-98.3 "KJOY" AC
WBZO-FM-103.1 "B103" Oldies/Classic Hits

I'd say that 94X is ripe for change...Connoisseur does run "BOB-FM" formats in other markets.
For 'HLI...likely the same...but you never know...

I posted a while back that the low-rated WIGX 94.3 should be bought by JVC Broadcasting, and used to simulcast the programming of WJVC, My Country 96.1. WJVC cannot be received in most of Nassau County, yet has respectable ratings of about 2.0, islandwide. 94.3, has a rather weak signal to have its own programming, but as a part of a simulcast could make the country station available to many more listeners on Long Island, who live in Nassau County and Western Suffolk. The PD of My Country had said in an interview last year that they would like to extend their signal to the west. Perhaps the new owner would be amenable to reselling WIGX, once they take possession of it.

As a listener in Southeast Queens to WHLI, it concerns me that we may lose the only station that plays some Pop Standards. WHLI is the next best station to what WNEW-AM 1130 was.

But I will hold my breath that WKJY (KJOY 98.3) will stay the same. Out the four stations owned by Barnstable KJOY is the only one in the top 10 with a 3.4 from the February Arbitron.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

A reminder to Kevin that Reading Is FUNdamental. WBZO posted a 4.0 share (6+) in the same ratings period.

How is BOB-FM that much different from the "generation x" format currently on 94.3 this week?

Major Armstrong,

We are all human and make mistakes. I overlooked WBZO 4.0 fifth place being owned by Barnstable.

Thanks,
Kevin L.Sealy

Is WIGX really doing that pourly? I'm an online listener to that station from out of the area.

I can think of some far more exciting formats for the better signals of the four, and none of it
includes variations on the AC, or classic hits :-X format

Anybody know what these stations are billing? Can't imagine there's much on WHLI or 94.3.

Billing for 2010, the last data that is not subject to an NDA, is about $12 million for the cluster, with WKJY at about $7, with WHLI at the other end with just under $700 k. 94.3 does a bit over $1.5.

I can pick up WHLI in Jamaica and Howard Beach, Queens and other areas in eastern Queens. But how far does WHLI reach in Nassau and Suffolk counties?

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

The usable signal at home or in workplaces, where most of their audience would be, is about 20% less than the innermost red curve on those maps.

While it can be heard elsewhere, WHLI is not going to get any real useful audience anyplace else.

Considering that Long Island is a big sandbar with about as low a conductivity as anyplace in the US, AM is at a disadvantage there.

94X sounds great, I don't understand why people on here complain so much about a station that dares to be different. God forbid something sounded unique on the LI radio. Its a mix of hits that differ from the same repetitive stuff you hear elsewhere on the dial.

Now if they just wouldn't limit their format so much then they would actually be closer to a station whose motto was" the station that dares to be different"

This is a 1/2 hour's worth of WIGX's playlist, NOT the station that dares to be different:

Get The Party Started
P!nk

12:05AM
Interstate Love Song
Stone Temple Pilots

12:02AM
Don't Cha
Pussycat Dolls

11:58PM
Slide
Goo Goo Dolls

11:54PM
Vogue
Madonna

11:50PM
Get Low
Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz

11:41PM
What Have You Done For Me Lately
Janet Jackson

11:38PM
Harder To Breathe
Maroon 5

11:35PM
All I Have To Give

Their problem is that they play too many genres of music. Most people don't like all of them.
For myself personally, there are about 3 or 4 songs on the playlist that I like, 3 or 4 that I am neutral about, and 3 or 4 that would make me change the station and not come back for a while. Everybody has different songs that fall into each of those groupings for themselves, which means that most people have songs in the "change the station and don't come back for a while" category.
