B94 CRACKS THE TOP 10

In the latest trends the B has a very good November and climbs to #10 12+, passing the X, Q92.9, and 100.7. Interestng in that there wasn't much promotion behind it.

In general, it was a really weird trend, DVE trending down with the Steelers despite them having aphenomenal season, all of the top 5 stations down in November.

Why would it be that The X ratings would slide when they carry the Penguins AND the highly touted arrival of Mark Madden in the afternoon drive? I'm one of those who has and still is sorry to hear Madden was hired, but after reading all the comments on this message board that he would be an instant ratings winner for The X and was nothing short of a coup to land him since he's such a huge Pens fan. And, Madden would crush the competition on ESPN and FOX sports radio.

What happened?

And the Steelers going down in-season as well..... Based on the overall look of this trend I think Arbitron got a bad sample, with 25-54s under-represented. Just a guess, but it does happen.

The thought occurred today- guess who the program director was who brought back Mark Madden to then "Sports Radio 1250, WTAE" in 1998?

Bill DiFabio.

Let's face it. The trends are now a joke. Arbitron's sampling is all over the board. The weighting for the actual books is massive. Arbitron is so focused on PPM, the diaries are an afterthought and they are just living up to contracts. Besides 12+ is only a beauty contest left over from the 70's. Both the number of stations and different formats creates a need for stations to concentrate on core audiences. PPM makes this even clearer.
My best quess is B94 will have a marginal book once it comes out.

Maybe so, but given the fact that the Zone was such a complete and total failure on 93.7, and that there's been no real money spent on the reincarnation of the B, the fact that it's slowly creeping back onto the radar screen at all is interesting, especially since it seems to be at the expense of ACs and not necessarily Kiss.

B94 CRACKS THE TOP 10. WITHOUT SCOTT WALKER AND JOJO KINCAID!

Maybe the x is facing the problem k-rock had...too much talk on a music station. when you tune into a station, you'd like it to be the same station you tuned into an hour earlier. also, believe it or not, there is a significant part of the rock audience that couldn't care less about sports.

BINGO! I love alternative and active rock, I also enjoy sports but I expect to hear music on an alternative or active rock station, and hockey and football on a sports station.

That was my beef with K-Rock and now The-X. I have no interest in sports of any kind and don't care for a lot of chatter. Sure, I fit the demographic but that doesn't mean anything.

Count me in as well. I'm 40 and like both alternative rock and sports talk. BUT, I really don't want to hear them at the same time. Plus, the only music making it on-air during Madden's show appears to be ultra-safe alternative tunes. This is no different than politics mixed with music. Tom Grimm did a good show; but I really got fed-up with all the political garbage you had to endure just to get the music. How does Hannity do on 104.7? Seems to me that M2 ahead of Ellis would make a nice block of local sports talk. That would flip 105.9 back to just music in afternoon drive, hopefully with someone in the chair who would know the music they were playing and could talk about it intelligently (think Sean McDowell with less off-topic banter)...and I'd be much happier. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of "personality-driven music radio". Hell, if it didn't sound so awful, I would probably be content with an XM or Sirius subscription (not that Pgh FM's sound great either). But, this is all just a rant from someone who has spent too many years working in radio.

??? finally, someone who agrees with me!!!!! the time is ripe for an fm station in this town to go all sports.....hell, the top morning show in pittsburgh is really a sports talk show (or at least discussion show) AND THE PEE WEE POWER AM SPORTS SHOWS ARE LOADED WITH HYPE, BUT THE TRUTH IS THE POWER RANGER WALKIE TALKIES I BOUGHT MY KIDS A FEW YEARS AGO REACH MORE PEOPLE THAN THEY DO...even with the best radio available in my vehicle, i still have trouble picking up their shows in pine township!!!(that's northern allegheny county for the uninformed)....AS FOR MADDEN...YOU LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM. they used to say the same thing about myron cope and bob prince when i was a kid. it's a recipe for success......toss honsberger in there too, or quinn, or...etc, etc.....as much as i enjoy his knee jerk relationship with callers, and his self serving disrespect for some sports legends, i can't take this music and madden mix...just not working for me....give me madden, and nothing but madden...and maybe throw in a foil to take some abuse and bingo!!!!!!! I got to admit I used to listen to Mark Madden when he was on ESPN Radio. The music on Mark Madden's show on the X drives me nuts. In my opinion, his show on the X isn't even close to being as good as his former show on ESPN. I would love for the X to go all sports.

I agree Todd. I've said it before, but that tired playlist of the X is the reason I don't listen to Madden anymore. I was a huge fan of the guy on 1250 but I don't need to hear "Jeremy" for the millionth time during a sports talk show. It makes no sense. Get rid of the music during the show and I will listen again.

Ratings are a mess right now. Almost looks like Arbitron was using a dartboard rather than any methodology that makes the least bit of sense. The numbers just don't add up unless:

A) There wasn't a single diary out north of Canonsburg
B) The number of satellite radios in the market magically tripled.

California- You speak of the Pee Wee AMs not having much power, but I don't believe that is the case.

Yesterday I was driving south on I-79 and wanted to listen to sports talk for obvious reasons.

WTAE, WBGG, and The X all died out south of Waynesburg.

I got 660 AM clear up to Clarksburg.

It does make sense with the longer waves that 660 would have a better signal.

I also must commend the hosts for having what I felt were the best topics. While other shows were, on a day for celebration, harping on Limas Sweed's dropped pass, the guys on 660 were taking on critics of Ben Roethlisberger.

I tip my hat to 660!

congrats to like guys and ladies workin their tails off to make the B work...limited budget, staff, ect..keep rollin...still miss that place...
