B-96 is a CHR station, and its mix will contain whatever the 12-34 female wants at any point in time. The reason CHR, and Top 40 if you go back to its previous name, has worked for 53 years is that it is a concept, not a particular music style.
The original CHR, KOWH, in Omaha, played what would later be called MOR hit songs. As music changed, it played rock n roll mixed with the MOR, and then the MOR gradually faded out. As CHR went through the years, we had many different subsets of popular music in it.
The reggatón format is music specific, as are most other Spanish stations. Specialization in Spanish is by music genres, not by concept in most cases. This is because there are very few stations, and it is more effective to offer clear differentiation.
Since reggaetón (whatever we call it) has been around for about 18 or 19 years, with relatively minimal changes, as a genre, it will evolve, but not change radically. The comparison in the Spanish music world, is salsa. It emerged in the late 60's, and songs form that era, aside from production values, are amazingly similar to those being recorded today.
