B96 deejay charged in stabbing

By Charles Sheehan

Published August 24, 2005, 3:30 PM CDT

A late-night disc jockey for Chicago dance music station "B96" has been charged with stabbing a man in her South Loop residence, Chicago police said.

Michelle "Candi" Gomez, 30, was charged with battery in what investigators called a domestic dispute, police spokeswoman Patrice Harper said.

Gomez works the overnight shift at WBBM-FM 96.3, better known as B96, according to the "Killer Bee's" Web site.

Police were called to Gomez' home around 3:50 a.m. Saturday, police spokeswoman Laura West said. Gomez told officers she stabbed the man, an acquaintance, after he struck her, West said.

The disc jockey has continued with her regular shifts, and station officials said her job was not in danger.

"She has been a very good employee, and she still has her side of the story to tell," said B96 Program Director Todd Cavanah. "I can't think of a reason, from what I know, that we would take any action toward her."

The victim was not identified. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition with a stab wound to his right shoulder, police said.

Gomez is free on bond pending a Sept. 8 court date, according to court records>>

OUCH!

Hey who knows, she still gets her day in court. I think B96 handled it well in the article, who knows, I'll betcha the guy had it coming.

I'm sure it was in self defence. We know mutual people, and I know for a fact, that she isn't the type of person to shank somebody. LOL

The problem is that some in the media can jump on this as another example of "rap" violence, because of B96's format. Unfair, and it isn't on the same level as what Hot 97's been through outside their studios, but it's going to happen.

If Robin Rock or Christine Moran were charged with the same crime, do you think that the Trib and the S-T would be giving it the play they are with Candi?

That's because the media doesn't get the facts straight. She Shanked him with a Shiv, had it been "rap" violence, she simply would have shot him.

Good thing Candi took the high road.

I have chatted about radio with her many times when I worked in Chicago. She is very sweet and down to earth. In my opinion it was self defense.
