B98.5 doing "Top 4 for the 4th"

This is the first time in four years (outside of the Christmas thing) that they done a theme day. They were big on all-70's weekends in the 90's, and all-80's weekends from 2001-2003.

I really don't read anything into this. I wish they would do this more often...give people a break from the same 300 songs on repeated loop from 12AM-7PM daily.

Before I heard the "Top 4 for the 4th" liner , I thought... "wow, the music mix sure sounds better this morning!" It is a shame that B has become SO stale otherwise.

For those of us who missed it... what was the feature exactly?

Instead of playing the same 300 songs over and over, they played the same 4 songs over and over. Just kidding.

The played songs that made the top 4 in the '70s, '80s and '90s.

I like it. Do you mean sets of four songs from various weeks or months in each decade... or the top 4 from each year? How often did they play these--or were they all combined and mixed throughout the day? How did they explain it on the air in liners or promos, i.e., what was the verbiage they used?

They didn't specify that "this hour we're playing the top tunes from 1971" or something...it was still mixed between decades and years. Most of the pub that it got on their air was from the jocks. I didn't hear any pre-produced promos or anything about it.

But it was a nice change for B98...for once in a long time, it wasn't "customer service put me on hold" music. Maybe they should program the station that way for good? I can hear it now..."if it wasn't a hit, you won't hear it here...we're B 98.5 FM!"

And could they drop the whole "listening at work" thing? I'm not sure anyone cares anymore at this point.

Here was a typical hour from July 4th on WSB-FM:

WSB-FM 10:00 AM DURAN DURAN Is There Something I Should... 1983 G
WSB-FM 10:04 AM CALLOWAY I Wanna Be Rich 1989 G
WSB-FM 10:09 AM KC & SUNSHINE BAND Keep It Comin' Love 1977 G
WSB-FM 10:12 AM KIHN, GREG BAND Jeopardy 1983 G
WSB-FM 10:20 AM BREAK Commercials And/Or Recorded Promos
WSB-FM 10:23 AM DONALDSON, BO/HEYWDS Billy, Don't Be A Hero 1974 G
WSB-FM 10:26 AM CARS Shake It Up 1981 G
WSB-FM 10:30 AM JACKSON 5 Dancing Machine 1974 G
WSB-FM 10:32 AM FALCO Rock Me Amadeus 1986 G
WSB-FM 10:36 AM TECHNOTRONIC Pump Up The Jam 1989 G
WSB-FM 10:39 AM FIRST CLASS Beach Baby 1974 G
WSB-FM 10:44 AM FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS Good Thing 1989 G
WSB-FM 10:49 AM BREAK Commercials And/Or Recorded Promos
WSB-FM 10:52 AM CARNES, KIM Bette Davis Eyes 1981 G
WSB-FM 10:56 AM WONDER, STEVIE Sir Duke 1977

From the list of songs, this sounds like it was much better than the mundane stuff that B98.5 plays all day. Almost like a Jack or Adult Hits format. Don't look for them to make any changes though especially in these days without AC competition. Now if Lite 96.7 would enhance their playlist by doing something like this, that would be a welcomed addition to Atlanta radio.
