B98.5 Loves Daughtry and Journey too.

I have noticed that B98.5 plays Daughtry at the top of every hour...all day...every day.
They play one of his three A/C hits. "Home", "Feels Like Tonight" and "What About Now ".

Why is that ?
It is quite annoying.

Also one Journey song is played every hour. Why is that ?

I have never seen two artists favored so much since Q100's love affair with Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty.

The BOB formula: 250 songs chosen after intensive litmus tests (Supreme Court justices are not subjected to such treatment).

B98.5 did this with Kelly Clarkson a while back. All five of her singles from her "Breakaway" album are on the playlist. Only 4 of the 5 Daughtry singles were added (B does not play "Over You").

As a result of BOB...AC songs such as Coldplay's "Viva La Vida", Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" (sister AC WGMG/Athens is playing it though), and Rob Thomas' "Never The Same" have never been played on B (not including Delilah, which is satellite controled). The same BOB also thinks 90's alternative music is soft rock as well (Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" for example).

An AC competitor will come in, and if they are mainstream AC with a modest playlist and currents like everyone else, they will kick B's you-know-what. Don't think it won't happen.

Because B98.5 FM is your #1 Daughtry & Journey while you work station.

B98.5 has always had an unusual playlist compared to most AC stations, as do all Cox AC's. Is it too much reliance on focus groups or Bob Neil's instinct?

You would think Cox would learn from Honolulu, where Crater 96.3 gets absolutely creamed by Clear Channel's KSSK.

I think Daughtry bought stock in the company (before it went private again)!!!

I would think they would play

Miley Cyrus - The Climb
The Fray - You Found Me
Rob Thomas - Her Diamonds

Oh those songs were in 2009...
I guess we have to wait until 2010 to hear them.

Why does B98.5 have to wait until a current a/c song is six months old before they play it ?

Is it a royalties issue ??

I think Gloria Estefan sold her stock back in 1990 to the Backstreet Boys who sold it to Sheryl Crow who sold it to Kelly Clarkson who sold it to Daughtry.

B98.5 is a heritage station in the market. It'd be real hard for anybody to come in and challenge them, even if B's playlist doesn't really conform to the traditional definition of an AC.

Do other AC stations consider Boston to be AC?

They have now started playing David Cook's "Time Of My Life" and that song was made last summer. Now, the song is a recurrent, not what you call a "new song." Personally, I don't listen to this station at all, but from what their playlist and the website yes.com tells me, they have not played many of the huge currents that were broadcasted in other AC stations, most notably, Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape," Taylor Swift's "Love Story," Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah," Katy Perry's "Hot & Cold," and others. Maybe it is a royalty or broadcasting rights issue or maybe I was better off streaming online from another AC radio station.

They can get away with a very sluggish playlist because they are the only AC in the market. I don't think any other group owners see a second AC being profitable in Atlanta because B98.5 has Steve & Vikki AND Delilah. For AC success in Atlanta you'd need at least one or the other.

Yeah, but you're implying they're doing this because they have no competition and don't have to do anything differently. Does it cost anything to play different songs? They apparently are doing it because they feel their playlist is the best way to attract listeners. And this is standard for all Cox AC's including where they have a direct competitor.

Good point. Maybe to Cox, 'competitive' doesn't always mean 'new'.

Remember, in the Cox lexicon "new" can mean several years old, as in "the NEW 97.1 The River--Atlanta's Classic Hits Station"
