B98.5's "One Hit Wonders"

B98.5 has another theme weekend...and this one is a real surprise.

They are doing a one-hit wonder weekend. They are playing one-hit wonders, many of which are from people I have never heard of.

Cox normally will not play unfamiliar songs. Apparently someone fell asleep somewhere. Songs include "Hot Rod Lincoln" from Commander Cody, Paul Hardcastle's "19", "King Tut" from comedian Steve Martin, and others that I have never even heard of.

Another thing...this is the weekend before Thanksgivng, and during the past three years, B98.5 has gone all Christmas the day after. It seems to me that they would not do a theme weekend the weekend before the flip.

So let me get this straight...most of the time people here complain how stale, boring and predictable Cox FM's (B and the River, particularly) usually are. And now when B's doing something that while not completely original, isn't entirely predictable and the same thing they've done every year, you complain again?

I salute B98.5 for going incredibly obscure. Why not? They're the only soft rock station in town. They can afford to take some off-the-wall chances on a weekend. As a man of the '80s, a few of the '70s cuts had me scrampling to google and wikipedia for who the heck they were. Examples: The Undisputed Truth's "Smiling Faces Sometimes" (1971), LeBlanc and Carr's "Falling" (1978), and Netherlands duo Mouth & MacNeal's "How Do You Do?" (1972).

Even some of the songs I know from the 80s such as Haircut 100's "Love Plus One" and Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" failed to hit the top 20 on the pop charts when they were minor hits. And somehow, the Thompson Twins were deemed "one hit wonders" with "Hold Me Now" despite the fact they had several top 20 hits including "King For a Day," "Lay Your Hands On Me" and "Doctor Doctor" that weren't terribly obscure.

I'm glad someone said it...

LOTS of complainers on here... jal, can B98 do ANYTHING right?

Thumbs up to B98.5 for another great weekend! The only time I can even listen to music on Atlanta radio is when B98.5 does one of their weekend specials (now if only they would get rid of Deliah on Friday and Saturday nights).

All of the songs I've heard so far were top 40 hits back in their day and I'm almost willing to bet that some of these songs haven't been played on Atlanta radio in years although I still hear them in rotation on stations in other cities.

It sounds great.. I just wish some of this would carry during the weekday. And yes, Deliah is so hokey.

Love Paul Hardcastle's "19", a very cool song. I have a 45 of it in my collection somewhere.

this was an excellent program, actually heard true variety on Atlanta radio, almost sounded as if I were listening to say, WQXI-FM in 1978...

True Variety = hundreds of reasons to change the station. A stunt like this would be a disastrous TSL-killer in a PPM world.

You have point to a degree..however...those songs listed are pretty bad. They're literally hundreds of better FAMILIAR one hit wonders to play.

The REAL question is:

Is RON PARKER a One Hit Wonder in Atlanta?

JAL??? I have heard of every one of those songs and as both a radio guy and a listener, i say, "give me more" and anything but "more of the same"

Can it be true....someone actually had a creative moment in this business and did the unthinkable.........THINK??????
