BA Launches New "Chillout" Format

Why does this sound like the same old thing with a new name?

BROADCAST ARCHITECTURE will launch a new radio format on March 29th called the CHILLOUT RADIO. The new format will tap into relaxing "feel good" hit songs from Rhythmic AC, Top 40, AAA, AC and Urban AC. Music from artists such as SADE, MICHAEL JACKSON, ALICIA KEYS, JASON MRAZ, NORAH JONES, GEORGE BENSON, JOHN MAYER, PHIL COLLINS, BEYONCE, MAROON 5, SEAL, COLBIE CALLAIT and KENNY G will be featured.

"Our new format offers something new and fresh in both variety and feel," BA Owner/Pres. ALLEN KEPLER stated. "Everyone needs a "FEEL GOOD" station on their radio, a bright place to regain their zone and help them escape from the stress of the day, relax, chill out and FEEL GOOD. Like Smooth Jazz did for a generation of listeners over the last 20 years, the CHILLOUT RADIO NETWORK targets today’s adults who need a break from rap, hip-hop and edgy rock music. The variety of music we're offering takes a mass-appeal approach to a format that is unique, yet features some of the most mainstream, sophisticated music recorded over the past 35 years." The CHILLOUT RADIO NETWORK targets both women and men age 35 to 44.

Is this what is referred to as an "oxymoron"?????

"FEEL GOOD"? I guess I'll have to come up with a new slogan now. I'll certainly won't want my station to be confused with this venture. :D

You have that slogan "TM"'ed, don't you?

I smell LAWSUIT!!! ;D

Another effort to reconfigure a group of overplayed oldies into something "unique."
The excitement is killin' me ::)

Broadcast CRAPatecture (You guys know what I mean) take two? They should have called this everything you already heard on the "The Smooth Jazz Network" minus the overplayed instrumentals.

Did? Why does do they make it sound like smooth jazz is something out the past. It is still here and vibrant today.

I wonder if this "radio format" will take over the smooth jazz affiliates that they have or will it be on new stations?

All of the artists listed above are already played on BA Smooth Jazz. It appears that they are renaming the Smooth Jazz format to Chillout Radio. Now the Chillout Radio name will be misleading because there are already Chill stations that mix down-tempo electronic with spacey rock. And those Chill stations have a much better chance of being the instrumental format with younger audience appeal than a station that plays Jackson and Benson.

When will a new radio format be developed that plays new music and not stale records from the late Michael Jackson?

You can put lipstick on a pig....

Very good points, Jazz Kat and star100. Sure sounds like the direction the aforementioned Jhani Kaye is going with KTWV, and I too am curious whether this presentation becomes the rebranded "Smoothest place on radio" for BA's current affiliates. And as far as the name goes, those artists cannot be farther on the musical spectrum from those featured on Internet radio stations playing "Chillout" music.

Wow! Allen Kepler parties like it's 1999! I know all my 35-44 year old friends will be buzzing about this new format that plays Jason Mraz and Kenny G.

Or not.

I wonder what's "Chillout" daily schedule going to be like with djs and all? I could probably see it now ...

Brian McKnight - Mornings
Anita Baker - Middays
Dave Koz - Smooth, (Oh, I meant) Chillout Ride Home
and maybe John Tesh - Weeknights For Chillout Tonight (Just because I like listening to his show now and then)

;D ::) Okay, I will stop goofing off now.

You are right on! When I heard the name, I instantly thought about what you pointed out. With 35-44 demos, that is what they will envision when they hear "Chillout radio."

Actually, this nonsense was already tried out back in 2004 when WQCD, which was then known as "New York's Chill" (which they gave a whopping 9 months to succeed, it would have if they not incorporated old r n'b and covers) abruptly switched back to their old, tired format and called it "New York's Chill-out Station".

You saw how that fiasco ended up. Man, that CD 101 was pretty sneaky trying to bill itself as a chill-out station, especially since they played no chillout music.

And radio execs get paid to come up with this crap? Terrestrial deserves it's downfall!!!

Gonna be pretty exciting to hear MJ's "Rock With You" for the millionth time, along with all of those other overplayed tunes NOT!

KTWV will become AAA or talk within the next 2 years.

Good riddance!

Here's the demo. This is much different from what WQCD tried. The word "chill" is the only similarity, and it's totally out of place with this music. Talk about a format that misses the mark...

Jeezus H...I just wasted 2 minutes of my life downloading and listening to the first 30 seconds of this garbage????!!!

BEWARE, IT'S JUST A BA PROMO OF THEIR "NEW" CHILLOUT FORMAT!

What a total waste of bandwidth!!

They even featured "Rock With You"! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Why am I NOT "feeling good" about this demo? ;D There is no "Chillout" music here. Just more of the same old, tired, overplayed A/C garbage that ruined the format to begin with. Lifestyle? Music that "feels good'? Sounds like many of the terms we have thrown around on this board about what this format SHOULD be, with one big exception: It does not INCLUDE the overplayed garbage contained in this demo. Just goes to show you that a leopard cannot change its spots.

I appreciate Bill posting this thread about BA's "so called" NEW direction. It is amusing to say the least. But like I said yesterday, it really has no bearing/relevance on the future of contemporary instrumental music on radio. In fact, if anything, this NEW direction will only serve to open up MORE opportunities for Internet broadcasters in those markets put off by the garbage terrestrial radio is peddling. I love it!!

When Santana and Rob Thomas made the song Smooth there were AC stations that did not play it because it was not soft enough. Now a station that calls itself Chillout Radio features the song in a demo. What happened to Chill music from Plastyc Buddha?

Perhaps this Chillout Station should be discussed on the Rhythmic AC or AC board.

This format will fail. It's not unique. Any song played on this station can be heard on another station. If you want to hear Maroon 5 why would you turn to this station where you also have to sit through Natalie Cole and other tired Motown songs. This goes against the philosophy of most radio programmers who stick to a tight format.

Just look at Live365.com and LoudCity.com they have better Chillout songs than what BA has. KSBR and wavjazz.net to get better music. Let BA fight over who gets the next contraversial talk show host on their lists. I say let AM and FM radio fight over Palin, Beck, and Hannity

Oh, I'm aware of what WQCD did when they incorporated chill into their mix. I was diggin' it.

Heard some good new stuff from the likes of Soulstance, Zeb, Adani & Wolf, Brazilian Girls to name a few. What sucked about it is they still played that old tired r n'b junk along with it.

So they dropped the new chill music and then proceeded to call themselves a station to "chill-out to" even though the format was as far away from chill as you could get.

Just like the "new" BA Chillout format....it's not chillout music.

I struggled, but I listened to all. Now all those overplayed songs are now ringing in my head. LOL

Agree with everything you said 100% AC Tones.

This format is everything but Chillout. If this takes over the current BA stations, this will be the dagger that will kill them. Then maybe we could get some rest from those songs, at least in the smooth jazz format. ;D
