Back in RI and radio is worse than ever

Just got back in the area and got to put my two cents in.
As a once avid WPRO listener I went right to 630 as soon as I was in range. Someone please tell me what has happened there. Is it my imagination or has this station slipped? John D...wow sounds like he's wearing cotton instead of boxing gloves. The Dan Yorke Show. WOW Dan....First thing I heard is how he's bulking up and anyone want to see his guns? And the same old callers...only older!!!!!
The rest of the station just purely sucks to me.
Went to WHJJ no better. Stomached Helen Glover for less than a minute. Sounded like she was doing a radio show to entertain herself. Sad.
To me RI radio has become mashed potatoes with lots of lumps and nothing to make it tasty. WHY?
Hate to say it but I went to Best Buy today and got XM, something I said I would never do. But RI radio just made me do it.
For those who have never been out of RI and been exposed to good radio (LA for me) I feel bad for you. You are being denied something that really can be fun--just not in RI.

It's probably not fair comparing Providence radio with LA although major markets have their share of hacks too. I assume you mean Los Angeles and not Louisiana. Still, Yorke is being Yorke which means it's the persona he wants to promote. If nothing else he's consistent. As far as DePetro I think he either plays by PRO's rules or doesn't work there so which would you choose considering he's over in Boston and really isn't good enough to call his own shots in other decent sized markets.

On the music radio end of it no one tries much anymore because audiences don't demand much and as long as stations "maximi$e" everyone supposedly has an audience. The market is old and tired. Anyone who was around in the 70s and 80s when suburban AM stations were playing music without researching much of anything will probably agree that RI AM music radio did actually sound better than RI FM music radio does now.

Radio across the board is cookie cutter. Nothing much stands out anywhere. Satellite really is the best alternative if you are looking for music. I have Sirius and I love it. Howard Stern all morning and 150 commercial free music Channels all day. The only good thing left about terrestrial radio is the local angle. If bombs are dropped onto downtown Providence and buildings crumble, at least it's guaranteed you'll know about it. When listening to Satellite you won't even have a clue as to if your town is burning down around you. Fortunately my phone still works and I'm sure that people would be ringing it off the hook to tell me about it. I would also read it here on the internet. I hate to say it, but Radio is probably less important these days than ever before. There are so many other sources to get your media now that Radio is no longer the only alternative.

I was vacationing with family for a few days down south, a few weeks ago. And after getting off the airplane.
Went right to the rental car company to pickup the car. Because my original car was not available. They upgraded
us to a car with Sirius. I was impressed with the vast selection of choices. And was looking forward to hearing
songs that no longer get airplay. While it was great hearing tunes I haven't heard in many moons. I kept hearing
the same songs played over & over again. On multiple channels. The average listener probably wouldn't notice.
But for those of us familar with radio. We hear with the average listener does not. I know many people here praise
Satellite Radio. But I can't justify paying the monthly fee. If they are doing (playing same songs over & over) like
over the air radio is doing now.

Well the difference is that nobody is going to pick up 150 crystal clear channels with terrestrial. But with satellite you will. No more static! At least 100 of those channels are also commercial free and every single channel is uncensored. It's just an incredible selection that you can't get from anywhere else. Yes it's $13 bucks a month. But that's only $3.25 a week. Less than 50 cents a day! If you truly enjoy radio than that's a very very small price to pay to enjoy yourself.

Better not reveal your home address.

There are still a few commercial broadcasters out there who will "torch your mini-van" if you even breathr the words: Sirius or XM! :p
