Back in the KDAY Jams...

It isn't surprising that they went this direction. They started as "KDAY Hip Hop from Today and Back in the Day" with most of the stuff being old school jams. But the radio station that would be facing some competition from KDAY possibly would be KHHT (although KDAY has a weak signal). They target about the same audience but I could be wrong.

Here's the press release from 93.5 KDAY re: format change on Monday 8/17/09 @ 7:30AM PDT. "End Of The Road" by Boyz II Men segued into "Gin & Juice" by Snopp Doggy Dogg (as was his moniker at the time of the song's release in 1994). Note the misspelling of the group name "Whoodini" in the release; it should be "Whodini". Obviously the staff at KDAY is very in touch (NOT!) ;) ::) with knowledge of the artists in their new format.

For Immediate Release
93.5 Drops the Beat and focuses on 93.5 KDAY FM
Los Angeles, CA (August 17, 2009) - The landscape of Los Angeles radio has been ever changing over the last several years and the programming at 93.5 is taking an exciting turn for the better. “The Beat” will be dropped as focus is placed on the brand equity in KDAY and its deep musical roots.
"Los Angeles has been missing the west coast sound. By eliminating syndicated programming, KDAY can now focus on its strengths as a local, independent station that connects with the diverse culture that is Los Angeles. With a mix of the old school and the new music that is enjoyed today, I feel we have a unique and winning recipe." - Adrian (A.D.) Scott (Program Director/ Operations Manager)
93.5 KDAY was unveiled at the Nokia Theatre on Saturday August 15, with some of Hip-hop's most iconic figures including: Big Daddy Kane, Dough E. Fresh, and Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick, Dj Quik, and Whoodini (sic). The sold out show attracted a diverse LA crowd of many races, and ages both young and old.
Celebrities that attended the concert, in support of KDAY included: Anthony Anderson. Kat Williams, Jackie Long, Carl Payne, Wood Harris, Flava Flav, and Affion Crockett.
Listen on Monday 8/17 at 7:30am PDT to hear the new sound of 93.5 KDAY.

I haven't heard KDAY in years and years. I remember back in the day they would allow high school students come on and rap. I wonder if any of the high schoolers who started out doing that ever made it big.

They used to play a song about big butts a lot too.

Well its about time!!! Los Angeles we have a Radio Station Again!!!!!! Thanks KDAY for coming back with the true sound that much of us Angelinos have been missing. Ol Skool Hip Hop Lives On!!!!

As long as KDAY stays true to its format of old school hip-hop and also local hip-hop for more than 6 months, and also starts to include DJ's like Julio G and the Baka Boyz in their lineup, i will be an avid listener.

As for the ratings department, I think in order to make an impact, they have to let the "format" make an impact over time but also understand that with their weak signal they will never run the urban table in L.A. but they should be happy if they can siphon some listeners from Power and KIIS and lower their ratings points, as they had been doing before Theo took over and the station went straight down the drain.

KDAY does have the opportunity to do something pretty revolutionary in this day and age of PPM, and that is to drive the listener back to a local listening experience, and have the community become truly involved with the stations direction. Hopefully they don't waste the opportunity again because they wont get another one at KDAY

One of the big reasons KDAY did not succeed with what they're doing now is that they "failed" to bring back the people who "originally" started the format it is known for....The Baka Boyz NEVER worked at the original KDAY and Julio G was only a mixer in the last few years who never worked AT KDAY...KDAY keeps trying to "fake it"...will they "keep it real" this time...???

Julio G is the 1 they need back more than anyone else including Theo. I do agree with the Baka Boys comment we wont loose much if we dont have them back. Rather have Theo in that time slot so we can get some more bomb drops from DJ Quik & others. But with Julio Back we get Wesside Radio & 9 o'clock bomb. Ither way im loving they are just back.

With all due respect bdub, there's only one name they haven't tried, and that is, the guy that started what KDAY is known for, Greg Mack...if they get him, watch out!

No Doubt but i ment more Julio G more so in comparsion to Theo/Baka Boyz etc etc etc. But yeah if the Mack Attack is down then it all good. I just hope they stick with the current format. My Ipod wont get much use. lol

Julio G definitely = more local oriented, west coast based new breaking music. That should be what KDAY goes for, L.A. does not have anything on radio that closely resembles Julio G, if they want to begin to distinguish themselves amongst the other urban stations in L.A. thats the best place for them to start, no question about it

Werent Julio G and Theo both on this last rendition of KDAY? Looks like it didnt work. Why not bring in some of the jocks that had actual ratings when the music came out. KDAY was on AM so going back to the way things were, isnt always the best. The only jocks i remember having ratings when the classic hip hop/rap was new, were the guys at Power...The Boomer, The Baka's, Big Boy (when he was at night). I could be wrong, but this is what I remember. And I know Big Boy would never move from where he is right now.

Yeah Julio G & Theo were both on the last time.I dont think they were the total blame for the fall. They had started out this way & flip it commerical talking about the station of course.l. Maybe thats why Julio G left or whatever the case. I do remember the sucess both of them had at the Beat. LA has been hurting for a hip hop station for a while now.

& Nah Power can keep Big Boy. Hot97 in New York just got rid of him. The only reason he was able to land that cuz Hot 97 is a sister station of Power 106. Julio G is pretty much KDAY. Keeping West Coast Hip Hop alive. I know i got my soruces of new West Coast Music listening to his show wheater it be Wesside Radio or 9 o'clock bomb.

it wasnt until Theo took over as PD that KDAY started to go downhill, and in a more mainstream R&B and syndicated direction. Julio G most likely left because of that direction and despite his and the stations uphill ratings. Westside radio was becoming a force, and can definitely do so again if they give julio the same autonomy as they used to. Julio G can sell music better then any DJ in L.A.

Arrested Development! MMM snap! Don't take this wrong but can we make this thing happen void of color, not white not black just radio and good radio at that! I'm a big tall white guy and I can't get enough of this stuff, but I'm affraid I won't be invited to the party and that would be just f'n sad!

I think the latest incarnation of KDAY failed because it relied too heavily on the past. I think the same thing can be said for the latest incarnation of the Beat on 93.5. Trying to replicate a certain moment/feeling from the past only works if done well. I would say that both efforts fell flat because times are different.

The original KDAY seemed to be successful because it capitalized on the rising success of Westside, at the time. 92.3 the Beat was successful because their imaging and their messages like "No color lines" resonated in the 90s. In today's form, both of these stations on 93.5 lack any resonance with the time and the place.

Power 106 seems to be much better at evolving and responding to changes in music, culture, tastes, etc.

Just my opinion...
