CBS Sports has announced a new segment on their "NFL Today" pregame show beginning with the start of the 2005 season.
The segment, titled "First To The Field" will be broadcast during the last ten minutes of the hour-long pregame show, and will originate from the field of the game to be televised on a particular CBS affiliate (I suspect that on doubleheader weeks, this feature will originate from the site of the 1:05 P.M. EDT/EST game). It will allow the game commentators to present a more in-depth preview of the game prior to kickoff.
On doubleheader weeks, I would not be surprised if a shorter version of this segment runs at about 4:07 P.M. EDT/EST, previewing the 4:15 "doubleheader game" to be broadcast in a particular city (provided that the 1:05 P.M. game has ended and the affiliates carrying that game have been switched to the "NFL Today" studio for a "between-games" show).
So why did I title this post "Back To The Future"?? Some months back, in a thread on the Classic TV Board about the early years of CBS Sports' "NFL Today" pregame show, it was noted that during what was then a half-hour pregame show, there was a lengthy segment (about 7 to 10 minutes long?) from the site of the game that would be shown on a particular CBS station. It was pointed out that in some cities, games began at :15 past the hour and the pregame show began on the hour. Nearly all of the pregame show was devoted to a preview of the game that would be seen in a particular city.
