Today I heard the newest song ever on Mix. Until "I Want it that Way" played today, I don't think I had heard a post-1990 song since day one. Are they going to slowly start sprinkling in mainstream AC now?

Which Way Do You Want It?

Hey there!

I Want It That Way is not the first post-1990 song that we've played. We have actually played Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" circa 1998 and Celine Dion's "Because You Love Me" circa 1996. Yes they are definitely few and far between but as far as I know, we're not going to sprinkle back to mainstream AC.

Whenever you play something like Backstreet Boys or Celine Dion, you lose me; I fear MIX might be trying to be too many things to too many demos when I hear 90s music. I listen a lot, but that's when I switch to my backup station. I noticed morning drive seems to be dayparted, aiming more towards the older demos; that's one reason Ed never loses me. Overall, I believe you guys are a contender. Hopefully, you'll get your sound tweaked a bit sometime in the near future.

And the hits keep on comin'...

I agree with my friend "Bulk" on the 90s pop. You can get the Backdoor Boys and the Bellowing Canadian Mooselady on at least three other stations. Concentrate on what a listener CAN'T get anywhere else. Noticed today that the calls have been changed to WMHX.

I wouldn't mind if you deleted that one permanently. By far Aerosmith's worst song. It's in my top 10 worst songs ever made. LOL

Tell me why-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

"I Want It That Way" is easily the most palatable of the Backstreet Boys' catalogue. The lyrics are wickedly absurd, but the melody carries enough complexity to make listening to it far less a chore than any other of their songs. The production isn't overblown, and the harmonies are just right.

As far as "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", I don't have a problem with Aerosmith doing a wimpy Diane Warren song...it makes their other stuff rock that much harder.

I for one wish Aerosmith would sink back in to the cellar of illicit drugs and booze which fueled them in the 70's. I don't think we'd have heard THAT song on the "Draw the line" album... Come to think of it.. Perhaps a little smack might do BSB some good. Maybe they could cut a cover version of Mama Kin.

Re: Which Way Do You Want It?

Overall, I must applaud Mix for their direction. They've earned the coveted preset button on my car radio.

I have noticed recently that selections have been popping up that cannot be classified as anything but filler - as if they've already moved on to the "B" List. Also, this is NOT current hit radio, so there is no need for the amount of repetition. It's good to hear some of these songs again, but repetition will burn them out.

Before I would even *consider* adding a Backstreet Boys song, I would pull out my Whitburn books and study the top 100 by year. Are they aware that many of the songs that dominated the charts in the early seventies were Philly Soul? You have THREE DECADES of music to choose from. Certainly, there is enough quality material in THIRTY YEARS to pick a few more baskets full of cherries. They've only scratched the surface of what the format could be, IMO.

Bob Moore is still looking for a job...he memorized the entire book.

No, really. He did.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Which Way Do You Want It?

Sounds like someone I'd enjoy spending an evening with chatting.

I used to be able to rattle off the year, peak position, number of weeks on the chart for obscure hits, much like the sports fan who can tell you who pitched a no hitter in the seventh inning of the 1968 World Series, or the kid who can tell you which attacks his Pokemon can do when evolved to a particular level. You store the data in your mind that you really care about.

I think it is also important to know not just what occurred but why, understand the region for which you are programming and have a good, discerning ear - places where national consultancies often fall short, again, IMO. Is it art or is it science? (asked rhetorically)
