What's it like to work for this group? Anyone know more about them?

Are they still run by Barry Drake? I know local management has a bad rep. As I understand it, the local GM used to be the nicest guy in the world when he was PD and then got very obnoxious and unnecessarily ornery when he got to be GM. I don't have any specific info, though and I look forward to hearing more myself.

I work at Backyard/SF. Decent people. They have not been afraid to make some improvements and spend some $$. Like doc said, they are efficient and focus alot on sales. All in all...good place!

If you're talking about Muncie, I think I'd rather offer fries with that happy meal. Someone needs to return to Minnesota.

looks as though a current manager for a certain Muncie Cluster is looking to bolt the company, Demo and resume were recently sent out applying for a gig....hmmmmmmmmm, wonder if BD knows, That makes the most recent PD gone (what is that 4 PD's in 13 months) Now I see a resume and demo from this manager applying for work with another company...the drama thickens......

Didn't they just hire a PD in the last couple of months at WERK/WURK? What's going on there?

uh-oh! somebody got thrown in the trunk again gang!

Is everything WERKing right over there????

(ha-chi-chi-chi-chi-chi!)

You know that little bird who just happens to get around? well, its on his word that the BYB OM has sent out his demos and resume to another market..That actually would be a very great thing for the company to have this person get out of power and leave. I hang with the crew at times and every single one is always saying how bad this person manages and holds them down just so his show can do well. to me, I could not work for a Narcisist like that. I also heard that the previous Program director of werk radio was fired, for what? I heard many different stories as to why but that answers the question above, he was fired, sounds to me they need better guidance at the top levels but what do I know bout managment, I sell advertising . thats just the info the birdie relayed...so take it for what you will, Me, I trust this bird 200%.

Only two good things about Muncie, that is Ball State Football and seeing it in your rear view mirror.

Just had lunch with another former employee of barnyard and the Program director of the AM WHBU, Leland Franklin was heard saying he is so sick and done of the OMs "crap" that he is going to exit the first of the year, said he has tolerated it long enough. That guy runs more people out but then again, if you have more talent than him, he gets very jealous I hear and man have I heard the stories over the years but if you like having your shoulders rubbed and allowing him to rub up against your back..he really likes you...lets see we ran over all the openings their today, they are looking for a news director, afternoon person on LBC, Production/Programming on WERK not to mention all the sales folks who come in stay for a few weeks then quit......If you cannot get hired anyplace else in radio then BYB is the station for you.....sure sounds like one of those places...I have never met the PD of the AM but I have heard he is a okay guy.....oh well, better get my call list filled out and call it a day......

No offense, but we are talking about Muncie. What drama could there be? Small town crap radio that can't make a dollar....

Heh. No offense? Yeah, I don't see why anyone would take offense to "crap radio".
Speaking as a mere listener in Muncie, I agree completely with "crap radio". There's not a damn thing worth listening to here. Not even a decent college-radio station at Ball State.

You forgot about Bruner's and The Rib Cage.

I worked for LBC, and I thought Steve was a great PD for music stations. The problem with LBC (and admittedly I can't comment on the whole cluster) is that when Jeff Weller left, the whole sales arm went to nothingness.

If they were bringing in more money, I'm sure Steve would have a lot more options on the table.

Is Amy Dillon still running the sales operation for WLBC? I remember her having experience in Indy as a rep for Emmis and then as manager for 107.9. Thought she had some good ideas.

Muncie must have went down the toilet in recent years. Loss of economic base?
(GM,Borg-Warner, Ball Bros, etc.)

WERK was the hottest station in Muncie back in the day when it was still at 990 AM...thanks to Bill Shirk and the "WERK Krew" using major market-styled audio imaging and jingles..and some of the hottest young talent at that time.

Only thing I didin't like about 990 WERK was it continually aired ads for "that drive in" near Hartford City...which I hope is now torn down after all those years. Muncie had problems trying to chase out the porn heads back then.

The lovely "Blackford County Drive-In"? That's what I remember most about WERK! :p

Kirkie... I enjoy your passion ‘n posts as they relate to classic radio, and we share and appreciate the same; but I must take a measure of issue with your near-unconditional embrace of circa mid-70s WERK... Fact is – they projected themselves at a hundred-foot stance when, in reality, they were a mere "foot-in-front" [during the abbreviated pre-FM era]... Shirk at his very-best :) Don’t get me wrong – I celebrate Mr. P – with a “multi-band EQ”, but WERK was little-more than a one-song/ten-spot, twenty-two-minute commercial-per-hour, station with a few “destined – and very talented” Indy-bound DJs, a HEAVY-HANDED format, and a GM who routinely showed-up at BSU RTM classes to encourage the yutes to choose a radio sales path by calling the on-air types – “Dog Meat” that could be “bought for pennies ‘n sold for even less”... His name was Bill Ramonoff... WERK was a “cash machine with a daytime license” that VERY-QUICKLY FADED the very-second AM radio encountered a mere bunion! IT DOES NOT EXIST on the AM band in any fashion today!

BYB doesn't seem to be horribly bad... but they also just don't seem to be horribly "Good" either... they seem quite content with mediocrity. That's not bad... they still seem to make their sales, and I know from folks who've been there that the owners are good at reinvesting in the company's technical needs. From what I've observed as a John Q Public member of the listening audience, they deliver a competent, decent product, but they also don't seem too eager to innovate or make it "fun"... some of the jocks, through their personality, make it "fun", but I think that's more a testament to the quality of the individual instead of the corporation.

I'm not bashing them, but I think they could do SO much more (see my post about the futility of the "Dual frequencies")... they don't have to, and they don't, because what they do does add to the bottom line, and that's what seems to matter there... and that's fine... they are a business there to make money, but I still think some embracing of what is available to them would add an air of fun AND create revenue for them.
