Backyard Broadcasting sells two FMs in Jackson, Mississippi to “K-Love” and “Air 1” operator EMF. Backyard’s Barry Drake entered the market nearly ten years ago with the purchase of then-WTYX at 94.7. The station evolve to a variety hits “Jack FM” going into the 2004 Labor Day weekend. In Fall 2008, Backyard tried to exit the Jackson market via two separate deals. #1, it filed to sell full Class C WWJK to the Holladays of New South Radio for $3.8 million. That never got to the closing table. #2, Backyard filed to sell Jack’s sister WRXW, or “Rock 93.9.” It’s a Class C3 licensed to Pearl. The buyer there was URBan Radio and the pricetag was $700,000. That also didn’t close. Now three years later, there’s a new sale and a single buyer for both properties – Educational Media Foundation of Rocklin, CA. We don’t yet know the price, but we can guess that EMF will file to convert both FMs to not-for-profit operation and will feature its networked Christian programming. Broker is John Pierce & Company.
