BACKYARD IN ELMIRA

None of the locals want to chip in?

I'll do it then. My two cents.

It's a much smaller market than it looks on paper. Several counties are included together to make up a very large survey area. The survey area is so large only a couple of stations can be heard throughout the entire survey area!
I don't know what Backyard is like to work for, but it is arguable that they have the best facilities and tools to get the job done.

I've been in the building there..had a nice run..

Basically about the best facility, even though, outside of the new automation, still way behind a lot.

Company will let a PD program (depends on the PD though)..whatta thought!

Overall, not bad, I was treated well. Downside for the rank & file is not a lot of pay in general in relation to cost of living, unfortunately.

Geographically, the market's a nightmare in regards to ARB..where the diaries land can mean a large swing in one area or the other, unfortunately.

Backyard OM Scott Free is a good guy. I worked with him in Cleveland. Known him for years. He's a straight shooter.

if you want to work in radio in Elmira...definately go to Backyard...the PD is very experienced and a nice family guy...the station is run like a Rochester or Buffalo top station...pay not great but experience and exposure excellent...the only on air station worth sacrificing pay in that market.

If its such a great radio group to work for, why doesn't the pay reflect it!! It is one of the best sounding stations in the market, but they still have a long way to go to become a leader in the market again.

Well, Elmira-Corning is afterall, market #223. Binghamton by comparison is #181 and Syrcause is #82. Add to this:

Inside Radio said:
Radio a "worst job for the 21st Century." The U.S. Labor Department says radio will be among the slowest-growing industries in the coming decade. Government economists say consolidation and technology breakthroughs will lead to 5% fewer radio announcers by 2015. Among the "negatives" for radio work - shift work and low pay, with the median salary for a radio employee about $11 an hour.

Kind of puts it all into a sad perspective. Is it any wonder some radio people are moonlighting at Home Depot and Wendy's?

Well that information sure does make things look hopeful for small market radio now doesn't it!

Backyard is a great company to work for now that they got rid of that tool for a GM Kevin White. Next step should be to get rid of PD Scott Free. He's got a major Napoleon complex! If you have an idea he'll more than likely turn it down but rest assured a week or 2 later he'll bring it up to the managers and take the credit and call it HIS idea. He's as bad a tool as KW was. If you want credit for an idea then just bring it up to the GM, or somebody higher-up than him, yourself. The equipment is state-of-the-art though and most of the other jocks and sales staff are great.

I don't know how backyard stabbed you in the back...Or your claims for Scott Free for that matter.....And State Of The Art??? Are you serious??? When the hell was the last time you we're in those studios??? For that matter you must not know what the hell state of the art is....For a big city guy...or so you say....Maybe you should go look at a NYC radio studio if you wanna see state of the art..

Wow looks like somebody's a little too sensitive ::) It happens when you realize (as you have) that the only way you'll ever see NYC, or any larger market for that matter, in person is if you're visiting there. My opinions of Scott Free are MY opinions and you can bash me or do whatever you desire but, NEWSFLASH, you don't have to agree with any of my views. I've personally never worked for Scott Free but I do know a few people that worked there post-JJ Morgan and some that are currently there and none of them have a single good thing to say about the guy. They're nice to his face because they have to be but they do nothing but talk behind his back. Again, I live in NYC so what I hear is what I comment about and nothing more.

Honestly, if something someone writes on a blog offends you in any way then you should probably take a vacation soon because you're liable to lose your mind. Don't be so sensitive.
