Bad idea for cumulus to even consider putting the yankees on wabc!!!

Sports does not under any circumstances belong on a talk station in the largest market. I see where the dodgers will be leaving kabc in los angeles for the all sports station that is good news. Now in my hometown of lousiville the cc talker there is 840 whas they do air the university of louisville games and university of kentucky games but that is acceptable it is a much smaller market. So i hope cumulus does not put the yankees on wabc.

What's wrong with it being on a talk station? WFAN is a sports talk station. WCBS is an all-news station. WABC used to air Yankees games, didn't it?

Indeed it has, Icy Blue. Back then, Michael Kay was the color commentator alongside John Sterling in the radio booth.

Sports is a tune-out for most talk listeners. If those listeners have to go to the webstream to hear their regular programming, they may not come back to the lowly noise-ridden narrow audio bandwidth AM. Shortsighted companies don't care if they make money on the sports.

That's the reason I tune into the webstream whenever possible: fewer preemptions. And better audio.

Keep the sports on sports stations, where it belongs.

Well, isn't that a good idea? NOT! I know that the Yankees were a money maker for WABC in the 1980s, but it belongs on ESPN 1050. When you hear it airing on all news 880, you're interrupting the news and weather flow. Still, it isn't a shabby idea. But I expect WCBS to hold on to the rights.

In big markets like chicago new york los angeles etc talk belongs on talk sports belongs on sports. For the large talk stations in the cities but like in la ktlk the liberal talk station does have sports and that is fine but i am talking for the big talk stations in big cities.

Anyone here have any guesses what cumulus will do to improve kabc in los angeles???Use to be an awesome talk station not so long ago relatively speaking. Like in 2000.

Putting the Yankees games on ESPN 1050 would upset a whole lot of loyal Yankees fans in various parts of New Jersey where team loyalty is strong.

The 50-kw directional AM just doesn't have the same signal as the non-directional clear channel (NOT Clear Channel) WABC, WFAN and WCBS.

The football Jets are on ESPN 1050 and they need a network of other radio affiliates in NJ to reach their fans. Those games are only once a week and mostly on Sunday, but trying to catch the Yankees on different frequencies while driving around one small state on a daily basis would be a pain that would result in lost total fan/listeners. Some affiliate stations also share the daytime/nighttime pattern problems of ESPN 1050 too.

ESPN 1050 even has a 10-kw directional LMA full-time relay station on 1040 in Western Jersey but the two full-time signals are still no coverage match for the 50-kw non-directional NYC clears.

Why is it more acceptable in a smaller market? Go programming practices are good programming practices. Football on a talk station is find because its generally one day a week...like its also ok on a Rock station.

Baseball should always be on a sports station because of the amount of games. Same for NBA and NHL.

Sports has been airing on talk stations since talk radio came into being. Quite often, it either makes them lots of money or brings in more listeners, and the games air mostly during evening hours, when talk listenership often goes down. Most talk stations in all size markets have sports contracts, so it's nothing new. Many of these talk stations even seek out sports team contracts, even when the best teams are snapped up. Hey, I'd rather hear sportscasts on talk stations than on FM music stations.

I know that in Chicago, the Bears demand that their games air on all-news WBBM rather than the sister sports station (WSCR). Apparently, they get quite offended by The Score's opinionated hosts.

Sorry, but the Yankees don't belong on 1050... they belong on 660. Top sports station in the country should have a team that compliments them, not one that is polishing their golf clubs to get ready for October in July. The Yankees have to bill more than the Mets.

The situation that may bear watching is the possibility of WBLS being sold to ESPN, as posted elsewhere on this board. If that happens, look for WFAN to simulcast on 92.3 FM. CBS would likely keep the Yankees and simulcast most of the games on 660 AM & 92.3 FM. When the Giants play, football would air on 92.3 FM while Yankee games would air on 660 AM only. The Yankees would have both a 50 kW AM blaster and a class B FM. The Mets would likely move to 107.5 ESPN-FM.

All of this depends on what happens with WEPN. If they have to remain on 1050 AM, they probably won't get either team and definitely not the Yankees. :)

For the longest while, Don Imus had proven the recirpocal. He was a talk show on a sports station. And he accomplished that on 'theeeee' sports station.

It's whatever brings in the money. WYSP Philly, as a rock station, not just Broadcast Eagles games -- they were the flagship station. In these parts, soft-Classic Rock Eagle 107 has interrupted its music for years on 107.3 for Eagles games.

And WCBS's numbers indicate that the Yankees have been helping the overall numbers, not vice-versa. This all-news station has carried a few hundred Yankee games and to no consequence other than good.

As well, metro New York City has a lot of sports teams to distribute at certain times of the year. Talk station WNYM broadcast a baseball game the other night, for example. With their ratings, the broadcast might have helped the format.

Plus, there are no NYC music stations left on AM. Not much of a choice there. *Some* form of talk is going to get compromised.

And with all the Thursday, Friday, Saturday games, it's probably best that metro New York City doesn't have a powerhouse college football team. Where would they broadcast one of those at this time of year? WOR? The 106.3 midtown translator?

Well, if the Yankees' lackluster effort in this year's playoffs won't do it.. :-X

WABC had the Yankees for many years until recently. When i want to hear the Yankees, I still mistakenly tune to WABC because they had them for so long. Are you a newbee to the area? Yankees should go back to where they were, I think it is great.

I appreciate the STRONG signal that WCBS puts into Connecticut. WABC's signal is abysmal, by comparison. Thankfully, we have local WICC 600 carrying the games, even if WABC got them, we'd just listen to WICC. :)

Airing the Yankee games on WABC would be a huge mistake. During the spring, you are replacing your most expensive talk host, Rush, with a game. Then Hannity gets booted many days in the early part of the season. And this is during a key ratings period.

Dumb move.

It worked for WABC before... Philadelphia's Rush affiliate seems to get by pre-empting El Rushbo for the occasional Phillies game and directing listeners to their Internet stream.

And anything over the syndicated Hannity radio show can be considered an improvement.
