bad leadership at cumulus

why whould the highest paid guy in the building allow poorly paid staffers to chip in for a gift? is he getting everyone a gift? i doubt it. yes steve is a great guy we all know this. i just find it hard to believe he would let this happen. has anyone in the building actually been to steve's home? no. leave the gift giving to true friends and family. last year the staff gave M. Dickey a framed staff photo. where do you think that photo is now? hell most of the people in that frame don't even work for cumulus anymore. that photo sat in his office on the floor for monthes after he got it, i think he threw darts at it to decide who was getting fired. often he'd stare at and say to himself "who are these people" and then run off to hooters to hire his next sales skirt.

We are now collecting donations for Steve's holiday gift from the staff that will be given to him the night of the Christmas party. Anyone who is interested in helping out please give the money to Dannie or I and will take care of everything else for you.
We have gotten a couple ideas from Gloria (his wife) and one item that is one his list will be around $225.00. We raised that much for Michael so I know we can raise that amount for Steve.

Dude, this is pretty much standard practice everywhere...not just in radio. But, I suppose he (Steve) could stop it if he wanted to.

Just don't contribute if you don't want to. It is not mandatory to give when you are asked. I think that it is a good idea to let the leader know that you appreciate all that (Steve, in this case) has done to make sure you still have a job. Comparing Steve Dickert to Michael Dickey is a low blow. To say that the company that you currently work for has bad leadership is also not very professional. Just remember everyone, including you dude, can and may possibly be replaced. If you have issues with the leadership of your company then you need to leave!!!! Radio is radio and it is supposed to be fun, but with the likes of you at Cumulus, I can understand why they might become bad leaders, but of course they are more professional than that, and will run the company just like it was their own.

Opsmngr you need to not be so negative and be thankful you still have a job with your attitude!!
If I were you, I would really watch my back. Your life must be pretty dull to be entertained by Radio-Info and myspace, etc. I really feel sorry for you.

jumpstarter, please read again. I said nothing but kind words about Steve. I also didn't compare him to mike dickey. You really need to read again. My point was in any business it's an odd practice to do something like that. In regards to keeping a job inside cumulus, those decisions are made in Atlanta.

It’s been said I’ve got one of the greatest attitudes in the building. There was nothing negative about my post. Life is not dull for me as I had lunch today with some of the great cumulus folks who agree it's odd practice. If I worked for cc or sc and had great respect for the gm there I would still have an opinion about it. Some would call this practice tacky.

In regards to being entertained by radio-info I’d have to say you and I are equally entertained as we now have the same amount of posts. myspace is fun to.

First of all, why is this being aired publically, and yes, Steve Dickert is a great guy. Bad leadership? I doubt that. I worked under his leadership for several years and never had a problem with him. But perhaps others do. Not for me to say. Now, on to the more significant note, since when do employees "buy up" for the holidays? That has NEVER been standard practice and never should be. One should buy for one's staff, not one's boss. ever. It makes for an uncomfortable situation for most involved, particularly the boss. I would never expect my employees to buy me a gift. A card is always the most appropriate gesture.

thank you for getting it.

for the record steve is a great guy and leader however works for a co that doesn't care about it's people.

Opsmngr --- do you really work for Cumulus or Steve? I have never seen this much negative in-house trashing on this board.
I know it's your own opinion and you certainly have a right to it. However, the system know as commerical radio has a protocol
of in-house respect and protection of ones own troops or co-workers. Steve reads all this and he'll FIRE you in a heartbeat.
You've all but compromised your own identity among your alleged co-workers and here. You may not get that Christmas bonus
or even a gift from that crappy company that cares for no one and that great ex-boss. Good luck and please include this
hobby on your next resume.

I'm in my 25th year of working in media, counting my detours into PR and government. At the radio and TV stations where I've worked, we were NEVER asked to contribute for a Christmas gift for the boss. In my department of state government, we senior staffers were given the "option" of donating for the commissioner's birthday and Christmas gifts. Her secretary usually picked out something that cost several hundred dollars. But it really wasn't optional--her secretary kept track of who gave and how much and passed along that info to the commissioner. The practice made me want to puke.

If you want to send the boss a card or small token, that's one thing. It should be done of one's own volition. Otherwise, there's a problem.

Well Evangelist, I've worked for at least five different radio companies (not Cumulus) and state government, and I've been asked to contribute to the boss' gift at all but one.  Tacky sure, but not uncommon.

kr0nic--I'm not saying it's uncommon, just saying that in my media career, an agency of state government was the only place where we were asked to give money for both birthday and Christmas gifts for the boss. I'm sure it happens in a lot of places; I guess I have just been fortunate.

In that one situation, I resented then (and still do) being pressured to give money to buy something expensive for a person who neither needed nor appreciated our gift. We were "asked" to give a specific amount and a couple of times, it put a crimp in some of our budgets. This person made a LOT more money than the rest of us. The person for whom we were coerced into donating is, hands-down, the most ungrateful, ungracious, miserable excuse for a human being with whom I have ever worked.

Again, send a card and maybe some homemade eats. Nothing big and fancy. It's not about the cost of the gift--it's the thought. And a small token given from the heart is a lot more meaningful than something expensive given out of some sort of coercion.

I don't remember you working for me, Paul...though we have worked in the same
location a few times.

LMAO!!!

And indeed, we've worked in the same place several times for several PDs and GMs.

Now, IF the gift was for Rome, I would give everything...but my life...and maybe most of it's miserable existence.
Steve has everything he needs, especially he has a great radio name, what more could he ask for?

Anybody wanna start a tread about what they hope for in their "holiday" bonus???

opsmngr, the fact that you posted a confidential company email on this public site is rude, and extremely disrespectful. You should not have a company email if that is what you use it for. If you want to donate money to Steve's gift you can, if not then don't. It's as simple as that. Perhaps you are upset because you donated money to Michael's present last year and didn't make it in the picture. If you're not happy at Cumulus than leave. Negativity is not an attractive feature in any person. All of the people that work hard get financially rewarded. Seeing that you posted this in the middle of the day obviously means you aren't pulling your weight to keep Cumulus great and therefore don't deserve to be financially rewarded. Sometimes Atlanta doesn't have a say so in an employees' dismissal. They trust Steve. I suggest you stop complaining and start working.

Steve is a great man and deserves the present that we are pitching in to get him with or without your donation.
