Bad Move For ABC's "This Week"

Usually, the Sunday morning political talk shows lead right off with their major interviews with politicians for the week.

Yet anyone interested in watching John McCain's interview with Christiane Amanpour on ABC's "This Week" had to first sit through a ten-minute puff piece called "Made In America," which is actually part of a series from ABC's nightly newscast hosted by Diane Sawyer. For ten minutes, political junkies had to endure a segment on how a couple was bringing in American-manufactured items into their home, followed by a two-minute followup with the couple, Amanpour, and Diane Sawyer herself.

This was the lead segment on "This Week"? Looked like "Good Morning America" to me.

Come on, ABC News. You can do better than that.

D you just need to walk away and give it up on this show. You're missing WHAMMY PRESS YOUR
LUCK and THE SMURFS for God's sake! ;D

ABC really ran that piece into the ground this week, not only on Sunday morning but also nightly on World News. It's a great concept and I like the premise of the story, but I'm not sure what, if any, good it did by stretching this thing out through an entire week.

I'm OK with it provided that ABC doesn't do what "Face The
Nation" tried to do in the mid-'80s under its then-producer, the late
Joan Barone: devote entire programs to pop-culture topics.
One Sunday the topic was androgyny and the guest was Boy
George (of the rock group Culture Club). The program got so
many complaints (this was supposed to be a political-interview
program, not Donahue or any other daytime talk show--this
was before Oprah, IIRC) that they never did it again.

@gregg75: Thanks, I try... even though those shows are nowhere to be found on TV in 2011...

@whitfm: I did note in the original post that it was a "WNT" segment...

@bpatrick: Boy George on "Face The Nation"... was it sweeps month? ::)

I'm thinking it was in February 1984 or '85 that
Boy George appeared on "Face The Nation", which
would have been a sweeps period. Nevertheless,
Ms. Barone thought that pop-culture topics would
distinguish "Face" from the competition which, at the
time, was led by ABC's "This Week With David Brinkley".

But as I noted, viewers insisted that she stick to politics.
It didn't matter; she died in 1985, age 38.

Guess you don't watch GSN. PRESS YOUR LUCK is on every Sunday morning......followed by
THE SMURFS on Boomerang (which I don't watch).
