Bad news for KSL

My One And Only Comment

I won't go into a back and forth with you on this, for Kevin's clearly able to defend himself if he feels the need to do so. My view is clearly not unbiased, so it's probably not fair for me to jump in.

But I'd strongly advise against making judgements about situations where you don't have direct knowledge, and against jumping to conclusions based on the brief off-prime daypart placement of a syndicated show that failed. (And I'd say that about any such situation, not just Kevin's.)

About that last point - the "Liddy and Hill" thing.

The woman who hired me at a major news/talk station in a top 30 western U.S. market some years ago...where I spent a number of years...I have nothing but the utmost respect for. She's out of radio now (her husband still does radio news), but if she were still in the business...she'd easily be one of the top news/talk programmers in the country.

She "gets it".

But even she'll laugh about one of her own decisions. Out of nowhere, she hired a weekend part-time board op/news anchor to do a specialty weekend talk show. The show basically fell on its face, and she shook her head most of the time afterwards..."what was I thinking?" I asked her about it, and she said, "but they had a GREAT tape!" and started laughing again. Unfortunately, what she heard there basically never happened on the air live.

Things happen. Programmers make moves some would consider to be odd. Radio programming is not a perfect science.

I will say that when you bring over-100-size market news/talk station to the level Kevin has in Roanoke, on an AM signal that is not literally AUDIBLE in roughly half the market (Lynchburg and beyond), you get noticed, and he did.

Let's also not forget that even maintaining ratings of a successful station is no small task. It's much easier said than done. How many times have you worked for a successful station when a new PD comes on board and trashes it?

Personally, as someone who has worked in radio in the Columbia/Jefferson City markets (and a resident of Jefferson City today) and worked with the Missouri Radio Network, I'm happy to see people who have gone through this market and become successful radio personalities. When I hear names like Kevin Redding (now with WROR Boston), Mark Reardon (WTMJ Milwaukee and now headed to KMOX), Brian Hauswirth (KTRS St Louis but now working for the state), Billy Greenwood (KSD St. Louis), it makes me proud to have walked the same halls as most of them, even if not necessarily at the same time. Hopefully, Kevin will be another person who has passed through this market and becomes a big market success.
