bad words on radio

Is there a real list of words or sayings your exactly not allowed to say on the radio?

I heard Randy on GAC say 'party pissers' and then they tried to dump it but they missed. wonder what will become of that. oh well thanks for the responses.

Go watch some George Carlin videos on Youtube, namely the famous "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" routine. Keep in mind that it's very NSFW.

Wasn't there a pop song about ten years ago that contained the lyrics "pissin' the night away"?

Some words could actually be said if used in different context (i.e calling someone a "meow" instead of talking about someone's "meow.") You can say something "pisses you off" or you are "pissed" - but you can't say that you took one. You can say any variation of breasts but the "T" word is singled out as offensive. Context is king.

But since the Janet fiasco, I'd bet most stations have recoiled in fear of heavy fines & avoid it altogether.

Obscene material is not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and cannot be broadcast at any time. The Supreme Court has established that, to be obscene, material must meet a three-pronged test:

*An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;
*The material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and
*The material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

Details on FCC criteria (although no specific dirty words) can be found at http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/obscene.html

There's a Jerry Jeff Walker song called "Pissin' in the Wind".

Some songs that have been on the air for years have been edited to cut out words that were heard uncut for years. Knee-jerk reaction.
For starters:
Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band
Money - Pink Floyd
Life In The Fast Lane - Eagles
Who Are You - The Who

i just think its a bit silly in general.

i mean u watch any sports game on tv and just read the lips of all the close ups. Hell, watch an NBA game (Which no body does) and you can hear them cuss.

There is no list, It all has to do with what is acceptable in the community your broadcasting too. Altho most of the things in the Gorge Carlen bit you cant say on Dallas radio. There are quite a few things that fly in Los Angless that can not air in Dallas. But there was a few weeks there when the FCC made it ok to say the F-word on air by not fining Bono but then they took it back, but as I said there is no line so it hard to tell some times of your too close or have crossed it until its to late.

It is funny you say that because I remember on several occasions in which guests on Jonesy's Jukebox (on Indie 103.1) and even Jonesy himself would always say bulls***. Why is that things won't fly in Dallas, it seems like much more of a city that would allow that.

It's really up to the general public on what is considered offensive. My grandma once told me that when you ordered chicken you would say white meat and dark meat rather than breast and thigh because that was considered a little rude (like calling feces sh*t).

You can say something is tit for tat but you can't say that you say some tits. You can talk about your pet Shitzu but you can't tell the world you need to take a shit. You can call someone an a-hole, but you can't tell the world that you need to wipe your a-hole.

I listened to Stern dance around words & phrases & he talked about how ridiculous most of it is. You have to say things like "dooty" so Junior doesn't get offended - meanwhile that is the word that he understands more than other words.
