Bakersfield Resolutions for 2007

My New Year's Resolutions for 2007...and the rest of the Bakersfield Market:
1) I resolve to listen to every English-speaking station in the market at least once this month...and try to find a redeeming reason why they do what they do. (Sometimes its hard...)
2) I resolve to come to my sales manager with at least one idea that no one has already done in this market (no Rides, no pools, no easy cash, no "Song of the Day", no "Live Night at Joe's Bar", no cash cube, no wheel of prizes, no secret sound, no weight loss endorsments, no free hot dogs at my car dealer remotes) I actually talked about doing a "Quarters" tournament at one of my nightclub accounts, until someone reminded me that The Fox did one back in the day when it was a Classic Rock Station.
3) I resolve to listen to every LOCAL morning show, and boycott the syndicated ones. I appreciate station's investing in local programming and giving me a local personality to introduce to my clients.
4) I resolve to try to figure out why stations competing against heritage format leaders refuse to market their stations aggressively (are you listening KBKO, Breeze, Beat, Play?). There's a reason you haven't made a dent against KUZZ, KGFM, Groove and Hot...THEY MARKET ALL YEAR ROUND!!! When was the last time anyone saw a KBKO billboard...the launch. When was the last time you saw a Breeze billboard...the launch. New stations take time!!!! Get out their and COMPETE! The market will be better if the top dogs are brought down a notch and actually have to improve their programming!
5) I resolve to try to figure out why certain clusters seem to screw up radio stations that have NO competition, or jockless ones at that (are you listening FOX?). Play the hits, make your personalities and promotions the difference between you and AGM's jukeboxes! Stop cutting off the balls of the FOX and make it the big dog it used to be...and forget about Pirate!
6) I resolve to patronize those stations and personalities that actually CARE about the community and are actively involved in community events...not just those that put their logos on the posters. I want to see the on air personalities actually trumpet a cause they believe in, not because their PD told them it was good for the station but because they actually care (great examples: Ken at KBKO and Casey McBride at KUZZ)
7) And finally...I resolve to try to be less negative on this board. Frankly, we all want the same thing, better stations, successful formats, great promotions, smart programming...and to make more money. When my competitors get better, so do I. Don't go for what's cheapest. Go for what makes sense and you'll make more dollars. Listeners aren't stupid and either are my clients.

Happy New Year!
Love to hear anyone else's thoughts...
