Bally RSN owner Sinclair looking at bankruptcy

“The RSN needs to be reinvented,” said sports media consultant Lee Berke. “And that means offering up their content on a range of screens at revamped pricing.

That's a good quote. The other part of the RSN is the time when the channel isn't doing play by play. That accounts for more time than when they actually have play by play. This was also part of the reason why NBC Sports Channel failed. They need to find content that will attract an audience during the day.

Other than old games, blooper reels, list videos (50 all-time top plays by a shortstop, 25 best dunks of 2022, etc.), European sports or talk shows (either studio or simulcast from radio)? What else is there? NESN runs two-hour edited versions of the previous night's Red Sox and Bruins games. I doubt any of this programming attracts much of an audience. Has any RSN, even when the business model was working, ever found the key to attracting viewers when a live event isn't on?

That's why they're all in trouble. They pay for the channel regardless of who's watching. If some are also losing money on the play-by-play, it's no wonder they're going bankrupt. The team doesn't just get a percentage. The team gets paid full price whether the RSN is able to sell the time or not. These channels aren't merchandising their product. NESN does it better than most.

You have correctly identified the problem with OTA. The number of outlets is highly limited, and they all have existing programming commitments.
That's why the only national OTA outlet that this makes sense on is the Scripps ION channel. If you are just running Blue Bloods or Chicago Fire all day long in hour blocks, why not break away in the evening, or anytime really, to show a baseball game? You could have some games air nationally, or make the games regional. Wouldn't be that hard to put up another satellite transponder with a multiplex of baseball games and seamlessly switch to the appropriate game. Phoenix and maybe Vegas would get the Diamondbacks, San Fran and Sacramento would get the A's and Giants games, Seattle, Portland and Spokane would get the M's, etc. Weekends you could get your local game and then a good national game maybe. There's lots of ways you could do this while keeping the Hawaii 5-0 and Criminal Minds going when there isn't baseball.

Diamond Sports Group, owner of 14 MLB teams' broadcast rights, files for bankruptcy

The company, which holds more than $8 billion in debt, said it expects its Bally Sports regional sports networks "will continue to operate in the ordinary course during the Chapter 11 process," with $425 million in cash on hand to fund the business.
Under an agreement with its creditors, Diamond will reportedly be spun off from Sinclair as a standalone company. CEO David Preschlack said he hopes the moves will allow the company to restructure for the future while continuing operations
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has already outlined what the league intends to do should the company start missing payments.
The plan, as Manfred explained it, would see the league try to get the games aired on local cable like usual while creating a new option for fans to stream local games, which has long been forbidden under the usual RSN structure:
Basically, the league would terminate every agreement in which Bally misses payments and produce its own broadcasts, then approach cable distributors to get those games on television while also overhauling its streaming arm by offering in-market games to fans.
This problem isn't contained to MLB, as Bally has the rights of 16 NBA teams, 12 NHL teams and four WNBA teams. The timing just means baseball will be the first sport to experience the financial repercussions.

That is Pontius Pilot washing his hands of Diamond debt. You dug this hole, get yourself out by yourself.

the hypocrisies of this bankruptcy:
1. Fox was supposed to focus on news and sports, so including the sale of the rsns is unusual
2. Sinclair is a pro-Trump broadcasters hence without mentioning the former President himself in reference to former Trump crony Makan Delarhim.
3. Sinclair currently has a dispute with Disney controlled Hulu hence no Tennis Channel in the Live TV service.

If we connect the dots and know how the Trump antics in media can be more unusually messed up

This is why you see more sports radio simulcasts on RSN's. They are just paying to air what radio stations are providing.

Mike and the MadDog on YES was 6 hours of live content that was cheap.

Has anyone thought about who may buy these RSN from Sinclair/Diamond Sports? Other than Apple, who has the cash on hand to buy these RSN's?
