Baltimore Urbans vs DC Urbans

I find it interesting that whenever I look at the ratings for Baltimore and DC, the DC urbans seem to show up with respectable numbers (PGC, HUR & KYS) but I never see 92Q in the DC ratings. I know the UAC WWIN does have the signal but I wonder if this phenomenon is more a result of the DC stations being better programmed the B'More. I know the last time I was in the area, 92Q and Magic 95.9 sounded horribly...bland and boring. Is this the primary reason why DC d/n seem to listen?

There's no comparison - DC stations have always sounded better then their Baltimore counterparts, especially when it comes to Urban and Crossover radio.

Q92.3 has a big null towards DC and WWIN is only a Class-A, so their signals don't cover nearly as much of the DC market ast stations like WHUR and WPGC cover the Baltimore market. Another reason that the DC stations tend to have a decent showing in Baltimore is that Many people in the Baltimore market, in places like Columbia and Annapolis, work in DC. Not so much the other way around. They are listening for DC traffic and news and stay tuned. I know that I fall into that category.

Or -- Another Example of Racist Code Language

"Urban" is a racist code word for "Black".

Washington has been a bellwether town for black radio since the 1940s. Also, the DC metro has a larger percentage of black population compared to the Baltimore metro. That's why DC can support 3 R&B stations, a hip-hop station, a jazz/AC and a gospel FM. Any audience they get in Charm City is gravy.

??? Please tell us, What do you mean "Urban" is a racist code word for "Black".

Yeah seriously - since when is Urban a racist word? Get in touch with the folks at Radio One and see what they say about that word/term.

Another thing, metro DC has an almost identical percentage of blacks as the Baltimore metro does. If anything, DC has a much large Hispanic base when compared to nearby Baltimore.

Baltimore just doesn't have as many signals as DC, and that's only b/c of its super close proximity to DC. Washington and Baltimore are closer to each other then San Francisco and San Jose are. Furthermore, if you were to combine DC and Baltimore the same way the Bay area is combined, then you'd end up with the 4th biggest radio market with 6.4 million listeners 12+.

Anyways, I'm going off on my usual tangences ;D

What true Washingtonian would admit to liking anything about Baltimore? Well, other than those baseball fans that grew up during the 70s-90's LOL

Having spent time in both cities in the Sixties, I think Urban radio was better in neither place. WOL and WOOK had lousy nightime coverage in DC and WWIN in Baltimore the same. WSID at 1010 was daytime only. Baltimore had a real edge with TOP 40 radio. WCAO had a low dial position and provided Baltimore with clear 24 hour coverage simply not available from WEAM in Arlington and WPGC( daytime only). WRC at 980 did go Top 40, but it was a little late in the game for AM radio.

The BEST Urban In the BMore and D/C was taken off the Air. X105.7 Beat them all. But at the Time CBS then infinity Was Crazy about Howard and flipped X105 to a Talk Format.

WPGC Still trying to call themselves a Rhythmic?

I do take issue with the word Urban to be used for radio stations targeting black listeners. It implies that everyone in the urban area is black, and that no blacks live in suburban or rural areas. Queens and Boston have large white populations. Why do we not refer to alternative rock stations targeting white people in the city as "urban". At the same time, go to Delmarva. There is a huge rural black population, isn't it a misnomer to refer to a station playing R&B music/ Hip Hop, like the one in Ocean City/ Salisbury , as "Urban".

What about the old V103? How was their sound?

V103 and WERQ never struck me as anything special. WWIN is OK but in my limited time in Baltimore, I didn't think their signal was that great. I will give credit to Magic for introducing me to Regina Carter, a fantastic jazz violinist.

WHUR on the other hand is just a fantastic station, I listen to its webstream often.
