Bama Country 98.9

I don't know when this happened or if it has been discussed but I was reading on the Atlanta board about a new country station in Atlanta I saw that Lance Houston was mentioned as the new afternoon DJ and APD. I don't know if it is the same Lance Houston that is currently at Bama Country so I went to check out their web site and was greeted by Bear O'Brian's smiling facing announcing that he had joined the morning show. This brought up lots of questions and one comment...and by the way Lance Houston is still listed as afternoon host on BamaCountry989.com.

Questions
1. Is Lance still at Bama Country?

2. Why and when did Bear leave Rooster Country and how long has he been at Bama Country?

Comment
I don't know the guy and this is only from observing from the outside, but isn't getting Bear O'Brian to host the morning show at your country station basically the kiss of death in Montgomery? There was the former country station on 98.9 before it became Star, then there was Cat Country 102. Wasn't he on Sunny 103 before the switched to be called Mix 103? From my memory that was at least two stations, if not three that switched formats or names that he was the last morning show host on here in Montgomery.

Answers:

1) Unfortunately for us, Lance Houston will only be at Bama Country for a little while longer. He is going to Atlanta. We are very happy for him. We knew that someone with as much talent as Lance would continue to move upward.

2) Bear O'Brian joined Bama Country just after the first of the year. You would have to ask him why he left Rooster. He is already making a positive contribution to the radio station and we feel very good about continuing to grow our audience.

Your comment- Is Bear the kiss of death for a country morning show in Montgomery? He just might be. But it won't be for Bama Country.

Thanks Terry for replying. Its always good to hear the truth from the source. I really wasn't making a bad comment about Bear...I enjoy listening to him, just an observation of his most recent experiences in Montgomery. Bluewater is different than owners who owned his previous stations. There is a definite commital to the format and to keeping the station live and local.

Congratulations to Lance by the way. Thats a big market jump for him.

I guess this means a new PD/afternoon host search is on the way, or has it already been completed?

I pride myself in working farily quickly- but since I found out about this about 24 hours ago..... it may take a little while longer.

So yes, we are looking. We will find the right person. Thanks for your comments.

Ahh, I didn't realize that Lance leaving was that fresh. Good luck on the hunt.

Good for Lance! I read about in the trades, too, and meant to send note. Terry, please pass my regards on. Except for the Clear Channel part, I'm sure we'll all be pulling for his success.

Thanks Russ... hope things are well over in Jackson. Did you ever meet my brother, Tim. He is across town at WJMI, et al .....

I met Tim a long time ago, but haven't seen him since I've been here. I asked some folks here if he was still around. My morning guy, Scott Steele, was in sales there with him before coming over here last spring.

I really like the people I work for, and with. Gwen is straight up, and there's more trust and support from ownership right on down the line than I've had in quite some time, certainly more than CC. Too many layers of management muddies the water. Kind of like too many cooks spoiling the broth.

I'm living in Ridgeland....when the wind is out of the south, the big jets pass right over my apartment. Great cheap entertainment for a small town boy. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm an idiot when I run out in the rain to watch!

I thought I smelled something. It was my ears burning. Yep, Russ, I haven't passed onto the afterlife just yet. Been at WJMI/WKXI/WOAD(and now)WJNT for ten years this month. I do a little "networking" with the Radio People from time to time, and you've got some quality coworkers over there. Ya know , Ridgeland's got cable, you oughta try it. Let me know if I can ever help you.

Appreciate it Tim. John Anthony speaks well of you. He's in the office next door to mine, so we do a bit of chewing the fat. You can always tell the old guys like us....always saying "you remember when blah, blah, blah....."

According to the trades, Lance has made his way to Atlanta already. Has his replacement in Montgomery been announced yet?
