Band opening Friday into Saturday?

For those of you in this part of the country who might be interested in such things, signs point to a possibly very good FM tropospheric band opening later.

Forecast maps look very encouraging. Further, just before noon, I was hearing KVKI 96.5/Shreveport while rolling down 240. When one hears that sort of distance in the middle of the day, it certainly bodes well for an opening in the overnight to morning hours.

Of course, this can all burn out, and nothing might come of it. But, it has been quite a while since a really good band opening, so I am hopeful.

Happy Ho-Ho.

Well, I can't speak to FM broadcast, but...

If you listen to 2m FM on Monday (Christmas Eve), the band always seems to miraculously open to the North Pole. Santa, using the call sign, K4-Big-Santa-Incorporated, seems to pop up every year on the 146.820(-) repeater.

His big voice is oddly familiar.

I was wondering what was going on tonight. Driving from Raleigh to Millington, I picking up Q94.5 Country from Poplar Bluff clear as a bell. I was picking up stations around 93.1 and 93.3 I had never heard from before tonight. I enjoyed Q94.5. However from my home radio, I was picking up hip hop station 94.5 from what they said was from Jackson. Their signal was also coming in good.

As far as Christmas broadcasts go, I love it when I believe the Sheriff's Department comes on Christmas Eve night on the scanner to warn officers to keep on the lookout for a man driving a sleigh going from rooftop to rooftop. It is always priceless.

That was always fun.

Both the MPD and county used to do it. Don't know if they still do...I haven't worked on Christmas eve for a long time, but one year we "chased" Santa from Eads all the way to downtown Memphis, if you believe the radio!
