I don't usually post my band scans unless something new and/or unusual happens and tonight I was hoping to see a repeat of some of the skip conditions I saw last week (I posted that one in the dx board). I decided that since I was stuck going to NB again tonight, after I was going to do a band scan. I chose the parking lot at the rose garden at Walnut Hill park.
<rant begins> Everything was fairly normal, mostly everything came in near perfect except the 2 Hartford pirates were a bit weak tonight, but here's where things got weird, and I know, maybe some of you already knew this to some degree as we all have used the term "cookie cutter radio", but wasn't that more along the lines of stations in the same group in different markets using the same chart list and having very similar playlists? NOT EVERY SINGLE SONG?! At least I'd hoped that I'd never actually see that... I did tonight.
08:55PM WHYN-FM Signal 5/5 Outkast - Hey Ya!
08:55PM WSNE Signal 4.7/5 Outkast - Hey Ya! (but slightly ahead)
I thought 2 things, first, weird that I'm not getting the usual NPR translator I usually get (I didn't yey know for sure that it was coast), and second, Mix is running the song MUCH faster. I decided to watch the race and see who won. It was Coast, and I stuck around to wait for an ID, but switched back to Mix now and then to see when they finished.
about 9PM Coast was playing Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are, mid way through, Mix played fun. - We Are Young, Coast finished and then played We Are Young as well and that's when I suspected something...
Coast had a local announcer, Mix had Mario Lopez. I'm not sure if he's a nationally syndicated show or just vt'ed to each station. In any case, I kept up the band scan and bounced back to both stations when the songs were due to change. Turns out the songs are nearly exact with one (maybe two) songs per hour were different. I really didn't think they would be so close.</rant over>
I think at some point I'll go the opposite direction and go to harbor park and see what I get or maybe to the shore. I also have been thinking about going up to Meriden, but not West Peak, as I think there would be too much overload (though I did try that with an old portable TV and my Zenith DTV box on my inverter once, got everything you'd expect and nothing more, kinda sad.
Still enjoying the lack of Translator on 89.7, WGBH was in PERFECT tonight once again.
