Very interesting, David. And just imagine what a mess that crowded dial would be if all of those stations were to start transmitting IBOC sidebands!

I wonder what it would sound like if I brought an old FM radio with little-to-no selectivity to B.A.!

cd

Thanks, Eduardo.

Can there possibly be enough advertising dollars to support that many stations? I'm assuming the 80/20 rule applies, with 20% having 80% of the revenues.

Not much sports talk, nor many political talk stations. I guess Argentinians love their government and have no complaints.

Looks like all of the stations are within 30 miles of Pilar. And I take it a lot of them run Class A equivalent power or less.

Many of the Bs. As. area stations are neighborhood or community stations, operating nearly like an LPFM in the US. The larger stations, which Eduardo has marked, consist of full market signals as well as some that don't cover the whole market but cover a cohesive part of it... such as a suburban station in the US.

Most of the big agency money goes to the big full signals. Then the zone stations get a bit, and the community stations get mostly local direct business, if any.

Not much sports talk, nor many political talk stations. I guess Argentinians love their government and have no complaints.

They are nearly all on AM... over a dozen local, live and vibrant big-power AMs. One even has 100 kw fulltime. Most have 50 kw, non directional day and night. And AM, in Buenos Aires, has just about half the listening share because between the country's two main sports, politics and soccer, there is always something to talk about.

The leading AM, Radio 10, is an example of the kind of radio seldom seen in the US any more. The news and production staff was over 50 people. When I was there, the morning show had 7 anchors... even a satirist who would do little humorous perspectives on the news in each segment. The ratings showed over a 30 share of AM, which was over a 15 share and #1 of all stations, AM and FM.

You would only get 4 or 5 stations and noise everywhere else, like it happens on my walkman :D

Thanks for answering all the questions, David :) As a small correction to you, Diez has lost its #1 spot last March, when it was surpassed by Radio Mitre. This is thanks to the decision of the new owner of Radio Diez of firing journalists critical of the government - including the satirist you're talking about. They now work on Mitre, which took most of the audience Diez used to have.
I think I'll post an AM bandscan too.

Fascinating stuff, Eduardo. Thanks for posting. I believe most of the AM and FM stations that you are listing in bold are streaming. I've heard a few of them online.

Yes, I know Radio 10 has suffered. I was referring to the period when I was involved with the station and with Mega, which ended 8 years ago. I was asked by the new owners to return, but they could not marke the right offer. Amazingly, it was easier to deal with Hadad tha the new group.

Totally! Now that Daniel is gone, those stations are on free fall :( At least Pop 101.5 still stays strong thanks to its "shock jock" programming.
