Bandwidth caps and HD streaming

So I got a 250 GB bandwisth cap from comcast.. what a joke Aye.. But I think they all have caps now.. Is my 128 streaming using Radio destiny going to go over.. It uses something like m3u I think.. Not mp3.. so I dunn... Should I drop my stream bandwidth down, if so, what is safe.. here is the server i USE HTTP://WWW.RADIODESTINY.COM I dunno what is safe and whats not.

128kbps will use roughly 41 GB a month. You probably are using mp3; an m3u file is a playlist.

128kbps / 8 bits/byte * 3600 sec/hr * 24 hours * 31 days / 1048576 (kilo to giga conversion)

i, too am trying to understand bandwidth..it looks like my show that airs live on sat night from 6pm til 2 am..and sun night from 6 until 11pm falls way short of the cap imposed by comcast. is there any effect on how many listeners are tuned in at one time?? I usually average 20-25 at any given time with a nightly total of 100 plus hits as new listeners sample the stream. i run the show through ustream if that matters..and i pay for a 12 meg down..1.5 meg up from comcast..although the download usualy hits way above 15 up to 20..and the upload averages 1.5 or just a tad better. i'm steaming at 44..but unsure if the stream is 128kbs..i do know from listening to the show on other computers the quality is excellent with no dropouts since i went from dsl to comcast..thanks for any advice or help...cl

According to ustream help pages, "Depending on your set-up and settings, broadcasting will dominate between 300-700kbps." The upper end of that range would be pushing your cap. And don't forget, that cap includes everything you do on the web. The total may hit the cap even at the low end of the range.

And a note to Mid West Clubber -- I assumed Radio Destiny ran the server. If Radio Destiny is the server software you're running from your home you most likely will exceed the cap.

I do appreciate the help and info..although i still don't have a clue what it means lol..for what it's worth..i spend roughly 35 to 40 hours on line per week..the majority of that on weekends with about 12 hours devoted to the ustream webcast..is there someone watching every single comcast customer and checking the cap limits ?..is it done automatically ?? i've had the webcast on since october of 2009 with no problems or contact from comcast so far..i may be somewhat naive about all the technical aspects of bandwidth..but seems to me as long as i pay what they charge me..my time should be just that..MY TIME..thanks again..

I was told by a comcast rep that we are ok and only using about 20% with a 128k stream, and very few people ever go over that. Streaming video infact uses a ton of bandwidth, but she said to just stream away and not worry about it. You get a warning for your first time. All ISPs have bandwidth caps now and have since 2008, and comcast offers the most generous of it. so no worries. we are all fine, and if we are not, they will tell is, and we can just curb our usage. I stream 128k for about 16 to 20 hrs a day, and have since dec 09,, and no complaints from comcast.

well if your streaming that much daily..i shouldn't have any problems with 8 hours on sat and 5 hours on sun..mon-fri..nothing is on..

The people who go over that are usually gamers and students in dorms with 4 PCs all hooked into one router and playing their video games.. If your only streaming audio and not the video portion of ustream then you will be fine.. ustream only uses about 41kaac if you use ustream producer,, even lower if you dont.

Come to think of it.. I really dont think you should use ustream Livestream or Justin.tv.. In fact I got banned from justin TV with no reason or explaination at all.. I would use the Radio Destiny software at www.radiodestiny.com... Or use Shoutcast or icecast, ustream can ban you and contact authorities if you arent paying musical roylalties,, plus do you want everyone to know who and where you are and what you and your house looks like? It creeped me out and I attracted stalkers on Ustream and was told by some that it isnt legal to play copyrighted music on ustream. Anyway,,, Radio Destiny has no rules and you cant get banned,, no one can see you or know who you are, and plus you get to see their IP Address.. One other thing I forgot to tell you is Ustream uses more bandwidth the more listeners you have, so lets say your running 41k,, and you have 25 listeners,,, do the math on 41k plus 25, and thats how much bandwidth your using. I have only ever acheived 3 listeners at one time, and its mostly just o to 2,, plus with Destiny it isnt using bandwidth until someone connects to you. If anyone wants to check out my stream its on http://www.radiodestiny.com/ look under dance, and I am Fire 92.7,, I stream from anywhere from 5 pm to 8 pm, all the way till 2 pm the next day,,, I log off so mama can use the modem and I can also listen to other stations, since Radio Destiny wont work through a router,, thats the only thing I hate about radio destiny, that and the fact that it doesnt support mp3 or WMA,, you have to have the special destiny medi player. The FM is on 24/7 however as it is also a part 15 station.
