Barbara Anderson: My Perfect Talk Radio Station

Barbara was one third of "the Governors" on Jerry's show, along with Jerry and Howie...Mod Squad theme
was the segment theme (4 pm on Tue right?) Barbara would prefer that WRKO put Finneran on at 7 pm
to interview book authors; as for her, she'll be watching talk TV...

A lotta pretty ancient guys on her list. It's 2007 now, not 1982.

True though it was interesting to hear Avi again for a bit (filled in for Howie). I'm surprised she didn't
mention the name of Gene Burns, whom I've heard again recently (via airchecks-KGO, San Fran). He's
also getting up there but he's also still got it.

As for her morning suggestion, WTKK may be locked into the I-man for awhile but why CAN'T they go
local? I guess people have to wait for Barnicle at 9 (ugh) then Grahamcrackers.

>>In my native western Pennsylvania, I could occasionally hear Jerry
Williams on megawatt WBZ, attacking certain Massachusetts politicians.
So my first impression of talk radio was that its mission was to
expose political malfeasance and give ordinary citizens a voice to
protest it.

Jerry W. : called himself a "muckraker", in that respect.

>>I'd indulge with Bob Katzen, who used to do Jerry
Williams's show with me in the early '90s

Oh yes, Bob K was also one of the Governors (maybe when Howie left to do his own show?)

There are two things about which I agree with Ms. Anderson...

1) the hand-off between Scotto and Todd Feinburg is very interesting - Scotto is much more of a social libertarian than Todd is, so there is real disagreement.

2) Michael (Savage) Weiner should be dumped.

It will be interesting to see how the Finneran to Feinburg hand-offs are. Finneran and Feinburg are both social conservatives but differ widely on fiscal issues, so it will be all fiscal issues all the time.

However, it is amazing to me that there is so much conservative talk in a state that is so blue. Imagine the reverse in Alaska. Seems like there is a business opportunity for the not under-served, the un-served market of partisan liberal talk in this state, particularly in light of the unhappiness with Mr. Bush and friends.

>>so much conservative talk in a state that is so blue

The state does seem solid blue esp. based upon how many Dems have gotten elected and there are
indeed many liberals/progressives but don't forget there are also many people who, like me, may be
fiscal conservative but social moderates. We don't really feel wedded to either party so we're
"unenrolled" and our voices are reflected in the callers on WRKO and WTKK. (As for libtalk, had
WKOX and WXKS been stronger signals, got more promtion, and put daily local hosts on, you'd
still have prog talk on in this town...)

WRKO, WTKK, and perhaps WBZ as well serve as "watchdogs" in a state where the Dems dominate
politically. That last fact may also stem from the fact that the GOP hasn't had much luck
in electing their candidates--and often Dems run unopposed (or against weak candidates)
in elections.

If done well liberal talk might eventually approach what conservative talk has done, locally and
nationally. (Of the various stations I'd think WBZ is kind of centrist and does well because of
news coverage and some good talk hosts. WTTT is solid conservative but has a very weak
signal and no local daily hosts and doesn't show up in ratings. WRKO and WTKK lean right but
WTKK has a few hosts who are more centrist or liberal--E&B, for example)

1) Get a good signal
2) promote it
3) Local hosts mixed with syndie
4) Entertain instead of "trying to win elections"
What would happen if WEEI were to, say, move its sports talk to one or two of Entercom's FM signals
(93.7, 97.7, 107.3) and Entercom were to put libtalk on 850? You'd have your fairly good signal, etc.
Perhaps it would work. But it's still weird to think that of all the places that don't have a libtalk outlet
now, one of them is Boston!

Or maybe libs just prefer news/talk via WBUR.

I don't think so.
I'm worried that list is more than a little out of touch with Boston these days. Most of the target listeners who are young families in the suburbs don't even know who Clapprood is and that list is twice as old as she is. It's going to take young people with newer names. That's the reality.
Anyone seen Finn? I missed last weekend's listening assigment.

Scotto, Todd and Graham aren't old, are they? Pretty young, I'd guess.

And Eagan and Braude don't sound old to me. For that matter, neither does Severin. Howie? Yeaa, a little, even though I like him.

Hi Shotgun, I listened to Ellen O'Brien who was on with Kevin Whalen on Saturday (I think that's his name), one of the Pundit Review guys from Sunday night. I thought she sounded great - Kevin didn't dominate the show like Sciacca and Clapprood have, so she got a chance to kick back, relax and have some fun while giving him a run for his money. He was okay, a predictable conservative, though he mostly knows about Iraq which is the focus of the Pundit Review show.

I am less worried about age (average age for talk is around 60??) than I am about variety - too many middle-aged, white, conservative guys in a market filled with lots of different folks all of whom buy products that can be sold on the radio... Almost half the audience is female.

Just in case you're wondering just how it is that I listen every single weekend, I record the stream and listen at my leisure... I was actually skiing in NH in great snow and activating some muscles that were apparently dormant, given how they feel now.

btw, I didn't listen to Mariellen Burns but tonyr did and he was apparently quite taken with her. Lucylu might be willing to share her thoughts about that... check this out http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,62593.0.html

Lucy, I've read tony's posts - he doesn't seem like a stalker to me, just someone who's got the cojones to actually say something positive on this board... and, having reviewed some posts further, he might be a she... still don't think she's a stalker...

Great question. To me it's about how you sound. If you sound outside the 25-54 target, it can't be good. And one thing I notice is that WTKK and WEEI both sound younger to me than WRKO. I would say it's the AM signal, except that EEI is AM, too.

WRKO just sounds old. During the bomb scare it was like listening to my grandparents complaining about rap. I'm not sure, but Howie may have used the word "hooligan." WTKK sounded younger, even though Eagan/Braude must be over 40.

Does that answer the question?
