Barbara Bel Geddes(1922-2005)

How ironic. The daily Dallas reruns on SoapNet have just gotten to the storyline where Miss Ellie becomes engaged to Clayton Farlow, having just gotten over Jock Ewing's death, and now in real life she is reunited with Jim Davis, who played Jock.<P ID="signature">______________

Hey KM, Why don't you take the time to find out just what Barbara Bel Geddes accomplished in her acting career and in her life? She was first married to Carl Schreuer in her early career, they had a daughter named Susan. The marriage ended after seven years. In 1951 she was married for the second time to Director Windsor Lewis and they had a daughter named Betsy. Windsor died from cancer in 1972. She had spent everything she had taking care of him since 1966 and was flat broke when the chance at the role of Miss Ellie was offered to her.

If Barbara Bel Geddes is reunited in eternal life with anyone it will surely be with her father (industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes) and her former husbands Carl Schreuer and Windsor Lewis and "just maybe" Jim Davis, but that is only for her to know. She also remains the only nighttime soap star honored with an Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a drama series which she received in 1980.

And to all you smokers out there I say "Quit before its too late!" the sad part is that it is probably already too late now! I say this after losing first my father, then my sister Barbara, my mother Virginia and then my adopted second mom Betty, all to cancer from smoking!

Oh c'mon, allison! KM is just a moderator around here, not the designated/resident obituary writer! His was a light-hearted post, not a mean-spirited one. Ease up, will ya?

But hey, thanks for taking the time to share a few things about Ms. Bel Geddes that some of us here on this board may not have been aware of (well, okay, maybe I should say "many of us" here on this board may not have been aware of).

And I really admired Barbara Bel Geddes for her ability to entertain, and was a fan of hers long before anyone knew that "Dallas" was going to be as big a hit as it was! And I really thought he should know a bit more about her life as she was a fine actress that also had a wonderful disarming smile!

Yes, KM is one of R-I's best moderators, isn't he?

And I too admired Barbara Bel Geddes. As a matter of fact, when she left Dallas for a season, Donna Reed just couldn't fill her shoes as Miss Ellie.
And speaking of Donna Reed, she too died from cancer shortly after her stint on Dallas.

> I remember her as Mama to J.R.

She also appeared in a classic episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, as a wife who kills her husband with a leg of lamb. The husband was played by Allen "Rocky" Lane, who was the voice of Mr. Ed.

No disrespect intended. My spiritual beliefs is that after death we are reunited with ALL the people we loved while on this earth who passed away before us, and will be reunited with the rest of the people we loved when they pass away.

My post was intended simply to point out the irony of her passing just as "Dallas" came to this point in the story in the SoapNet reruns. Nothing more, nothing less.

Chill, Allison. You overreact too easily (and this is coming from someone who overreacts themselves on occasion).<P ID="signature">______________

Such a flirt, Allison.

I thought this, from the obituary in the Los Angeles Times, might be of interest to you, Allison:

She decided to take the role of Eleanor Southworth "Miss Ellie" Ewing on the CBS drama that ran from 1978 to 1991 because she was "flat broke" after spending six years caring for her second husband, who died of cancer in 1972.

When Jim Davis, who played husband Jock Ewing, died in 1981, "it was like losing her own husband again," "Dallas" producer Leonard Katzman told the Associated Press. "It was a terribly difficult and emotional time for Barbara."<P ID="signature">______________
