Barix Equipment

Anyone have setup information for Barix to be used as a standby STL over the Internet? Support for the Barix equipment seems to be very limited.

I have read a lot of stuff about Barix in this and many other threads and made my recommendation to the customer. I have a Extreamer and Instreamer coming from BSW. Before they get here I was curious, do I need a null modem cable to program them from my laptop or a straight 9 pin RS-232 cable?
Thanks

As I recall, some units used to come with a 9-pin cable, but easier is to just plug the Barix box it into your network router using the RJ-45 connection. By monitoring the headphone jack on the Barix, on power up, it will announce the IP address that is assigned by your router. Simply type that addresses into your browser, and you will be connected. It doesn't get much easier.

I don't know about you, but the last two laptop computers I've owned don't even have a 9 pin RS-232 connector.

ooooops, yep your right, no serial port on my laptop :p
However, no network, only a single ethernet connection at each drop site which would plug into the Barix box. No other place to plug in my laptop. Plus I would like to fire these up on the bench before taking them out to the sites, and presumably load in the IP address of the Extreamer at the studio and whatever other set up is required. So, if I get me a USB to RS232 converter will I need a straight cable or null cable??

Surely you have a network somewhere...like at home? Or an old netgear router not quite ready for a garage sale?

I sent an email to the previously posted address asking for the best stl settings and got NO RESPONSE. As the software with my most recent barix was messed up it would begood to be able to get the latest and greatest settings. There are several softare versions out there. Some work better than others. i ahev 2 barix units currently that are locked up. I mentioned this in my email which has received no reply. I am wondering if baris has support now?????

When the ip address is read, type that into your browser. You will get the barix home page. I am not sure what the latest software to use is but try getting that from barix. I have been mostly happy with the barix units. make sure you get a 12 v power supply not 9v as was shipped with some units.

I connect my receivers to a stream that is fed mp3 using an ogg vorbis encoder. Worked equally well with a wma encoder. The use of barix both ends has advantages. having the best settings is paramount as I have seen many suggested settings which are different.

NOTE SENT JULY 17 RECEIVED NO RESPONSE. I would like to know the best settings and the current software being advised for use.

Recent posting on Radio info indicated you would help.

Subject: STL use barix

Dana,

I have had so few problems with my Barix units since you supplied the 12v power supplies some time back but I had to ask since i saw the post in RI.

What are the best setting for STL use onthe barix units. I am streaming with ogg vorbis currently and receive these on the barix units in the field.

I ahve 2 units that have "locked up" and have some verison of sotware I hadn't seen before so I need to reload the software. Got them from Broadcasters Gen Store last year. Now would be a good time to ask what version i should use.

Like CE's suggestion, either use an old router to set them up, or buy a couple cheap switches from any office supply place or discounter and drop them into your sites. That way you have several extra Ethernet ports available on site. That what we did in our transmitter shack. Having a extra switch around is never a bad thing these days in our increasing IT-driven world.

I have personally set these barix boxes up as an STL. I used the Barix Instreamer at the studio and the Exstreamer at the transmitter site. I got a Static Public IP Address for the Xmiter site so I could monitor the barix box from the office. On the Instreamer, set it to stream RPT to the Xmiter IP address and port 3030 (example - RTP://###.###.###.###:3030). On the Exstreamer box, load the STREAMING CLIENT firmware from the barix site. There is a PDF on the site that tells you how to do this. Then, on the streaming URL set it to RPT://0.0.0.0:3030. Assuming all of the planets are aligned, you should get a stream.

Side note, I have connected to the box both with a serial cable and through my network. Network is so much easier! Just connect the box to the LAN, connect your headphones, connect the power, write down the IP address as the funny voice calls it off. Go to any computer on the same network (ie a web computer in a studio) and punch that ip address into a web browser.
