Barix Instreamer Settings

Hey Guys,

I have a set of Barix Instreamers and Exstreamers that we are using as a Backup to our Starlink STL's. Any suggestions or hints to how these should be setup for a reliable stereo link (MPEG3, MPEG 2, RTP, BRTP). We have a 6meg Down and 800k DSL line at the transmitter site and studios.
Regards,

The Barix boxes are awesome. We have a Barix expert in here, if you will do a search of the messages, Dana has posted some reccomended settings. I have used them and I have a very steady, reliable link from my studios to an FM transmitter 35 miles away.

First, you need a Public static IP address on one end or the other. I prefer it on the studio end, though some like it on the receive end (so they can go into the Exstreamer remotely).

Let's assume you do have the static IP address on the Instreamer:

Second, you need a network connection that has DHCP (assigns computers IP addresses automatically) and a computer on the same network. Hook up the Exstreamer and plug a piar of headphones into the jack on front. The unit will announce its IP address to you. Put this address into your web browser andf the main page will open.

Next, you need to put the Streaming Client firmware on your Exstreamer. The stock Exstreamer is designed to be used in home automation.

Here: http://www.barix.com/downloads/1_1742_streaming_client_updatekit_vb150_20070808.zip

Unzip the stuff to your desktop. In the Exstreamer, find the update tab. Follow the directions and upload the file compound to your Exstreamer. It's a .bin file.

DO NOT touch anything until you get a message that says the file has uploaded successfully! Then, unplug the unit and plug it back in. Hold the reset button for 30 secoinds then release. Refresh your web browser and you'll see a new screen. Mid way down the screen, you'll see three lines that say: "Streaming URL". Put the following in the first line:

BRTP://(the public static Ip address of the INSTREAMER):80

Right below this there are three settings. Put the following into them:

Stream Check Period: 10

Check Period Limit: 10

Buffer: 2s

Click on apply at the bottom of the page..

NOW, take the Instreamer. and hook it to your network. Get into its web page and go to the streaming tab. Mid way down the page you'll see eight entries that say: Stream To.

Change 4-8 to NOT USED. Change 1 to: BRTP and put 80 in the port box. Put NOTHING in the IP boxes.

Go to the bottom and click apply.

No, go back into the unit and this time click on the audio tab.

For a beginning setup, try these settings:

Encoding and Frequency: MPEG2/24 kHz

Quality: 5

Click apply.

Now, the LAST thing you need to do is change the units IP address so it's the public one (or a private one if your IT person has opened a hole in the firewall for you.).

Click on the Network tab. Put in the static IPaddress, Netmask and Gateway. These should have been provided by your ISP or network person. Click apply.

Once you click apply, you will NOT be able to get into the web pages unless you use the IP address you just put in the unit. if you make a mistake, simply hold the reset button in for 30 seconds. This will return things back to factory settings-but you will have to put EVERYTHING back in!

Please do this!! The past four Instreamers I got back from dealers simply needed to be reset! We CAN NOT sell these as new once opened! This means that it cost Barix over a grand because people couldn't read directions!

If you've done everything right, audio should be running between the two units. if not, you need to either call us at Barix or see if your IT guy can help you.

The AUDIO settings are subjective and involve a balnace between fidelity bandwidth. The abve settings will give you better then FM quality in a stream of about 100 kbps.

Does this mean you can stream audio through 3G without a static IP address?

Many people do just that. The best thing to do is use a static IP address at the Exstreamer (receive) end and use a 'push' protocol like RTP or raw UDP from the Instreamer.
I'd also recommend that you stay with the saem ISP on both ends if possible.

Thanks for your help La_Guy. BRTP stream works great! But another question is how do you make the USB Playlsit function work. I have loaded a Windows Media Playlist onto a USB stick but cant seen to get it to play the playlist with the stream disabled. Thanks Again

You need to use MP3 files....

Can that USB drive be accessed remotely?

Can I load it up with mp3 files and let it run, and then if I need to update the files, connect via IP and add/subtract files?

Not at this time. Perhaps in the future.
