I had something strange happen with an Instreamer 100 unit today. In this one particular location the unit acted pretty odd. It came up with a solid green light and a very brief red light flash. This particular place had DHCP enabled (college campus), and that's how I had the unit configured. I could get the unit to work elsewhere and my home just fine behind my home firewall, etc.

Another clue is it seems I heard the voice start an IP addy once or twice but only get to the first part of a word then stop. Very odd.. Normal computers around the place on DHCP worked fine. Certainly not the boxes failure, but I'm curious what didn't work for me at this particular venue...

I have had the power connector on a couple of them act flakey with me. I have an Exstreamer 100 sitting next to me listening to the Swiss radio service. I'm trying to get it set up to use as an STL but I'm afraid I have a router back at the studio I'm gonna go need to beat on some before it will work for me. I don't think I have the port forwarding set up properly. Uuugh. Networks!
 
Funny you mentioned the power connector issue. One thing I have noticed about my Instreamer 100 is that the power adapter they sent has a coaxial power connector that has the incorrect ID (inner diameter) for the connector on the Barix unit. If a guy wiggles it a bit the unit will turn on and of and on, etc. I plan on going to Radio Shaft and getting the correct connector for the unit sometime soon. Hopefully Dana will let them know they might want to look into this issue as some folks won't realize it's just the dumb power cord that could cause an issue. Aside from the power issue that won't be that big of a deal for me, I still haven't totally figured out what wierdness resided in the network where I was having the red light blipping issue. STRANGE stuff..

If it's a new one, I'd send it back. I had an Instreamer that would not link up with my router. Plug it into the computer, it's fine, plug it into the router and nothing. Like to drove me crazy. I called DataNAB and they were happy to replace it. The new one works fine. Computers!
 
Using a barrel connector in the first place is clearly a sign of Barix's consumer roots. But certainly they should get the right size.

Hopefully it has been addressed.
 
I will report your comments to the powers that be in Switzerland. Do remember that these units are designed to be used in consumer applications-and also they offer a lot of bang for a fairly small buck (There's a lot going on inside these units and also royalties are a big cost of building the Instreamer).

Barix will be coming out with a professional product line, the Instreamer and Exstreamer 1000's the middle of this year. They are supposed to have balanced inputs and outputs, AES/EBU digital ins and outs, better power supplies and also the capability to send four contact closures along with the audio. They will also cost more.

This way you will have a choice, much like the consumer/pro choices that many make with other equipment.
 
Looking forward to a more PRO version of Barix.Maybe they could get close to the tieline or comrex products, just at a better price point and do linear uncompressed files. But as with most electronics (plasma;s) the price will begin to really drop after some time in the market place..
 
They are a VERY good value for the bucks.. I'm guessing they just changed their wal-wart supplier and didn't get the right exact spec on the adapter plug. I just know that Joe Adverage consumer will preceive the connection as "loose" and many units could potentially be sent back in as a return when it's really not there is nothing really wrong with it. Lots of broadcast stuff these days uses wal-warts and coaxial style barrel power connectors... No biggie there. I'm headed over the Radio Shaft to get the right connector now. :)
 
I hope I am not too off topic here...

Can someone here refresh my memory...I am interested in an IP Radio to go a fairly short distance (maybe a mile, 2 at the most). I was thinking some folks here have had some experience with such a device.

Licensed or Unlicensed? What band? Budget? Are you in a major urban area where shared spectrum is crowed or in a (relatively) remote area?

How much will the new units cost? I'm holding out on buying the instreamer 100 because I want the new AAC+ that is on that new unit.
 
Just bought a set of the 1000's and will report on them as soon as Metrocast
installs the cable drop for high speed internet sometime in the next
two weeks.
