Barix STL ISDN

Can A Barix Instreamer/Xstremer unit be used with ISDN? I have no access to DSL or Broadband cable at my site but we use ISDN with a Comrex codec. I think we get 7k but we just installed a FM translator so we need 15k.

This may be too simple, but how about looking on ebay for a ISDN codec that CAN do stereo like Telos Zephr or one of those dreaded Musicam prima 120s, etc? I think you'd be much happier if you're still forced to stay with ISDN service out there. Have you checked around to see if there's any good wirelsss internet providers in the area?

Yes, you CAN do it with ISDN, but it wouldn't be pretty. I would think you could somehow find a ISDN modem made by Adtran or someone like that which would provide a nice ethernet connection. If you had that on both ends, dialed up from one unit to the other unit, and had null modem cables, you could probably get it work as a point-to-point. Buying something like a used ISDN codec would be so much easier.

Good luck!

Amen...

it can be done, but you will lose the advantages of ISDN and still have the disadvantages of IP.

And in case you plan on asking, you will NOT be able to communicate with the ~20,000 ISDN codecs in the field.

Which Comrex codec are you using? Most will do "Turbo G.722" where both channels are bonded for a 128K channel that provides 15KHz. Actually doesn't sound too bad. Very low delay as well.

There are some Zephyr Classics on eBay that might fit the bill. They won't do AAC but they will do Layer III which would give you 15KHz in Mono on one channel.

As t123 noted, your existing DXR.1 can be made to work at 15KHz by simply instructing your TA to make a 128K (Bonded) call to the other side. It won't be stereo, but it will solve the frequency response problem.
