Barker's last day on "The Price is Right".

Am I the only one who draws a parallel between these two events:

1. Walter Cronkite's endorsement of Katie Couric

2. Bob Barker's endorsement of Rosie O'Donnell

Number 1's endorsement failed miserably, as would number 2. These are old guys trying to influence their successors.
 
Rosie succeed Bob?! Dear Lord, please don't let that one happen!

I can't stand listening or looking at Rosie. IF she were to succeed Bob (heaven forbid), you won't catch me watching it.

It's about "wanting to give her a try" not about making her host.
CBS can stick her with the hardest games (to host) durring her "trial" if they wish to be creul. (anything even Bob hated, perhaps...?)
 
Good Lord! Even Bob was getting forgetful about how all the games worked. During the past few years, it seemed that TPIR had moved more and more toward the easier games. I chalked that up to the fact that Bob was getting older.

That's probably why they need someone relatively young like Todd Newton to host the game show, although Bob was about 50 when T(N)PIR started.

I think Rosie will not only get the job, but she'll prove everyone wrong and do a damn good job at it.
 
CBS needs to stick with those 3 mentioned guys they were telling us-time and again-to become the next TPIR host (Todd, Marc & George). They'll be making that announcement soon. However, when Katie succeeded Dan Rather, the ratings took a huge nose dive, she wished she should stayed on "The Today Show". But lately, Brian & Charlie already have beaten the crap out of her. If Rosie gets the job, look for empty seats in the studio because NOBODY is'nt going to watch her. I wish TPIR would be cancelled because the best host on TV has already been retired.

Well, apparently you're right about that. Lately, TPIR has been easier pricing games (The Range Game, The Clock Game, Most Expensive, One Right Price, Et. Al)-and they play like 4 of those games during the hour, and they have been cutting down on Grocery/Car/Small Prize Games down to just 2 per day. If the new host is chosen, he would re-store everything to its own glory. Car/Grocery/Easy/Big Wheel/Easy in the first half; And Car/Small Price/Big Wheel/Showcase in the second.
I think CBS will listen be they make up.
 
We don't see it very often these days. But, traditionally, game shows outlive their hosts and are re-invented over and over again. Jeopardy survived the transition from Art Fleming to Alex Trebex. Wheel of Fortune has had a number of hosts over the years. The Price Is Right came back as The New Price Is Right. What about the now cult-like GSN favorite Match Game. I remember watching the original version in B&W when I was 4 or 5 years old and, then, Match Game 7x as an older kid.

So, it's time for the baton to be passed. Honestly, TPIR is not about the host (although they got a great one). It's about the pricing games.

What about a night-time TPIR again? I would love to see a 30 minute version in the pm rather than Wheel of Fortune.
 
Barker was asked about Rosie and as gentleman of the old school, he gave a tactful non-answer.

Cronkite decided to play good soldier and remain loyal to CBS in his public pronouncements, despite the shabby way he was treated. But he still gets checks from CBS.

Les Moonves is not about to move Katie to mornings and put his wife (one of CBS' four Katie wannabes) out of work.

CBS doesn't have anybody else and they don't have a clue what to do next. They have committed themselves publicly to sticking with Katie until after the next election.

Jim McKay may have gotten his kid a job working for Roone Arledge but the kid ain't no Roone Arledge, in either news or sports. For one thing, the guy before Roone at ABC News paid big bucks to bring Bawa Wawa over from the Today Show (it didn't work then either). Instead, Roone reinvented the evening news and used people already in house (two of whom had struck out on the evening news before). He smarted up the news, instead of dumbing it down. He did hire in Brinkley but found the right job for him. He knew the news was an ensemble vehicle, not a star vehicle.
 
As mentioned above, Katie took over for Bob Scheifer, not Dan Rather. As for "The Price Is Right", I'm kinda glad I recorded Friday's episode. It'll be nice to play back in a few years, or whenever Bob should pass away.

That's not exactly true. I did some research into the Jeopardy! transition some months ago. After the network version of canceled (a second time), it took 2 or 3 different pilots before Merv Griffin made the current incarnation stick. There are some interesting photos posted to the Jeopardy! article on wikipedia. Even the current Alex Trebek incarnation was not the first attempt. They actually tried a different set up the first time around, and the older music, but nobody bought. The current one was based on 2rd pilot that was shot. I think what you mean is the idea of the game survived but not the orignal show.


Wheel of Fortune is a better example for your purposes, since the transition to was Pat Sajack was pretty seemless, IIRC.


Rosie is not right for TPIR. Even though she'd have to work real hard to screw that up, since the host of a game show is dfferent than that of a talk show, in that nobody's asking her opinion, what happens when she goes on the interview circuit to promote the show? That last one is the reason why, I say again, Rosie is not Right for the Price Is Right.
 
Has anyone considered that the use of the simpler pricing games could be to fit in more advertising? The simple ones take less time.

Sometimes it's not about what takes less time.
It's about what gives them the excuse to spend more time showing a product to the viewer, without boring the viewer.
 
Two sides of the same coin. They have a finite window, and if you need to spend X on prizes & commercials (both of which I count as the "advertising" component), you only have Y time left to fit in the required games.

My first reaction to this was,"Oh, for pity's sake!"

However, I would much rather him than Rosie. ANY day and tomorrow, too.

Wonder if he'd ever get the opportunity to use his line from "Happy Gilmore"? LOL
 
There is one thing that could be worse than Rosie O'Donnell hosting The Price is Right. That would be if she hosted The Dating Game. :eek:

DVD, Teevo, videotape--whatever you use to record on--an episode of TPIR, pause your recording machine during the credits and then frame-advance (i.e. frame-by-frame playback) during the credits.......there are at least two lines in different cards with production credits for an "Adam Sandler". Dead serious.

I don't know if he's the same guy or if he's someone else with the same name (most likely, bringing "Ocham's Razor" into play) but it kind of makes you wonder.................
 
I think an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" paid a tribute to Bob for his incredible work on "TPIR". Barney went out to L.A., won a pair of watches, a camcorder, a laptop, $12,000 in cash, and BOTH showcases. All 5 stars of the show were born around the same time TPIR debuted in 1972. I think Neil Patrick Harris & the rest of "HIMYM" gang all grew up watching their "DAD" for so many years.

On the other hand, I believe Todd Newton appears to be the strong front-runner to take over Bob in September. I balso believe CBS will make this announcement in a couple of weeks. Todd is young and he's well-experienced, and I think He'll be be doing a wonderful job keeping TPIR going for another 30 years. That's my take-What's yours? Let me hear from you.
