Barry gets surly.....again

Barry Youn really got a nasty jibe in at CC today.

He had just been schooled by a caller and was angry about it because he had no real answer, just the typical talk show junk you throw out when you are losing.

At the end of the show he said "I got enough stuff for a third hour, but management doesn't think I am worthy of a third hour on this station!"

Yow!

I've heard him play around and joke, but he wasn't joking this time.

Hey Barry, you ain't Rush or Hannity, they are the ones making the money, CC doesn't care about a local host.

KFNX would gladly give [EDIT] a third hour...[EDIT].

But hey, KFNX is the final resting place of all the late, great (?) ex KFYI talkers: John Dayl, Charles Goyette, Dr. Laura... :p

[EDIT-inflammatory]

If Barry put as much effort into his daily show as he does to his company, he would deserve a third hour.

Did he mean himself or Kim? Or both? KFwhyEye only broadcasts two of Mrs. Komando's three hours.

He was saying it about himself, but it does apply to Kim.

Kim has a fantastic show, and why KFYI doesn't do it all is stupefying. I mean, we can lose an hour of Jan D'atri gushing over pesto sauce, can't we?

Kim's show is OK I guess, but Premier Radio is now syndicating Leo Laporte, who is the #1 radio voice in this genre, and far more knowledgeable and entertaining than Mrs. Komando…

…but it has puzzled me how the hometown (flagship?) station doesn't even carry her program live…

This is by far the dumbest thread yet -- and I've read some really dumb things here. Who cares if his last name is Youn? You think you're hurting him throwing around his name? And I heard the thing he said at the end of his show Tuesday. Just another of his many jokes about CC. You guys seem to hate CC (lots of people do) yet you poke Young on this board for hitting and jabbing at CC? And by the way, I've seen the ratings up close & personal. Barry's ratings are very close to Rush's and slightly better than Hannity's 12+ & 25-54, book after book. Why do you think they put up with him?

It so happens that I know Leo Laporte and Kim Komando. They are both very nice folks. Neither one ever says anything bad about the other. And good luck to Leo! But where in the world do you get that he's "the #1 radio voice in this genre?" Number one? Where? When? By what measurement? Kim is on over 400 stations, writes for USA Today, has published who knows how many books and makes a fortune doing it. Her performance is consistently high for 11+ years and her website is well done and gets millions of hits a day. Clearly, Komando's show is the industry standard, period.

There's room for everyone but you people are just silly. Or jealous -- of just about everyone.

He puts on a good show and gets a good rating, good for him.

But, if you have been listening since he got here many years ago, you gotta note that the show is half of what it was.

Its usually phoned in, and on the rare occasions that a caller completely schools him, he can't handle it and he melts down.

Leo Laporte is awesome, I used to listen to him all the time on 640, Kim does a wonderful show, and its very listenable, plenty of room for both, in fact, I'll take 10 year old reruns of either to the "Online Tonite" guy who I don't even know if he is still on (nor can I remember his name)

[EDIT]

(FWIW, I never predicted the end of KFYI, terrestrial radio, or that KTAR FM would run away with the ratings in the first book, so find another stalking horse)

[EDIT]

I never said anything about his real name, you did.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

Never mentioned Young's real last name? Of course you did. Your very first sentence in the thread. But let's not spar at the truth.

[EDIT]

I posted my comments not to you LC, but rather to the thread. Don't take things so personal, amigo. You could seize up. And no one wants that. Work with me here... D e e e e p B r e a t h s. Now -- Exhale and R E L A X. R E L A X.

And by the way, Young's in the KFYI studio each day. I know this for a fact cause I see him racing down 44th street each morning at 7:59. I guess he could get there earlier. But he and Bruce are the only ones who use that studio. Unless you mean something else by "phoned in." And if his show is, as you say, only half of what it was, his ratings are quadrupled what they were. Maybe more. When here got there 20 years ago, there weren't any ratings now, were there? BTW -- they've asked and offered him 3 or 4 hours, morning drive. He won't. Said on the air he never would again, and hasn't.

Okay, relxation's over. You may type more venom now. But I'm goin to bed.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

I can't believe that yesterday was the FIRST time you heard Barry Young comment on the air about wanting three hours on the air. I've heard him make quick little comments about it several times on his show.

I've heard him before, but yesterday was very nasty.

He does deserve an extra hour, much better than hearing an hour of Rush, or flipping over to hear Aunt Carlos drone on about his wife's weight loss. ;D

No, let's spar at the truth! ;D It's more fun that way. This is what LC said: I never said anything about his real name, you did. True, he merely typed Edward's [The Nearly Barry Youn] real last name, but he didn't state that it was his real last name--you did! ;D

Feel better?

Good!

Um, back to parsing the truth. Here is what you said in your post: Who cares if his last name is Youn? You think you're hurting him throwing around his name?

That seemed to be directed at LC. Call me crazy, but I think you were addressing his post directly...so he replied.

We now return to our regularly scheduled venom... ;D

Is Edward B. Youn III [[EDIT]] surly where you are?

[EDIT-inflammatory]

Like the other Barry (Bonds), [EDIT] would do another hour if the money was right. It's always been about money to him. As far as the [EDIT] better half goes, Nurse Jeff and I recall KFWhyEye has never cleared her final hour, even back in the 9~ten days. Seems there was always a cooking show, vet program, home inspector, psychic or something equally lame that took the time.

More people eat at McDonalds than feed themselves with quality food fare. More people listen to Britney Spears than classical music.

I write "#1 radio voice" based on the fact that (a) Leo has been a radio voice for nearly 20 years, and has done TV shows (and still does TV in Canada) on MSNBC, CNBC, TechTV…, (b) he has build a podcasting network that rivals Komando's audience…, and (c) the quality and content of his show is far superior

I've read some of Komando's books and in comparison to Leo, she is a lightweight -- Komando's show is interspersed with sound effects and glitzy contests, but the focus is on Windows primarily, and I've heard her dispense some questionable information at times. Leo, OTOH, covers the whole spectrum of tech (from Macs to PCs to cell phones to PDAs etc...) and taps into experts in the field of the PC world, HD video, F/OSS (free/open source software), Macs, podcasting.

You're from out of town, aren't you?

--Clifton Gray

How quickly most of you forget.. in 2003 Barry did an extensive bit (imagine that, Barry doing shtick) where he counted down to the end of his contract, and predictably, he stayed with KFYI (after a 2 week vacation) in August. One of the things he talked about just prior to announcing he would stay at KFYI was that he has a very long day and doing 3 hours every morning was becoming tiresome.

Barry's jabs at Clear Channel are generally just (as is usually the case with Barry) bits done for the express purpose of a cheap laugh. Occasionally he takes a legitimate shot at Clear Channel and KFYI (or other hosts), but rarely. Most of you who are either in this business or are avid listeners should know by now that 90% of the Barely Famous Nearly Young show is shtick. Anything that Barry says on the air should be taken with a grain of salt at best. His show is a big disappointment from what it used to be in the late 80s and 90s. Now he is so ensconced in his own shtick, tired sound effects and inside jokes that the content portion of the show is extremely limited. Once in a while Barry actually takes a phone call or attempts to interact with the audience, but that is almost a once in a lifetime occurrence at this point. Whoever made the astute observation that Barry "phones in" the show these days is right on point. Fortunately for Barry, this market is so incredibly weak that there isn't a show that can compete with a very mediocre program like his--Aunt Carlos would be hard pressed to beat Adam Carolla, the automated morning show on KDKB or even static on 87.5.

As for Kim's show. If you are even slightly computer savvy you'll know that her show is beneath you--it's a good show for older folks--or those learning how to use that confounded 'puter, but otherwise, you're best to turn off the radio entirely on the weekend.

I talked with TNFBY today on the phone (maybe the one he "phones it in on!") and told him about being the center of all these messages. I'm hoping that he will comment on this board. But first, some comments.

Correct. That's what happened. He says that he enjoys doing it. And that's the ONLY reason he does. If that enjoyment disappears, so will he. And by the way: This message is not directed at any one writer but the thread, in general.

Okay. Your opinion. Wrong. But it's yours. And you're entitled to it. In truth, Barry's hilarious. But when he's serious, he's very good. People know the difference. People listen. They enjoy and stay on 550. Arbitron results show this as a FACT, book after book. No one touches him in his time slot. He hands massive numbers off to Rush. When he asks for calls, the lines flood. You guys can whine and rage and carry on with your jabs and cuts all you like. At the end of the day, Barry wins. You loose. His advertisers win. In fact, if he's "phoning it in," it's the most listened to phone call in Valley Radio. And usually very entertaining.

Again, wrong. National Arbitron numbers show that you have no idea of what you're saying here any more than before. It's just an opinion, not factual. Not reality. Her numbers are very strong in both 12+ , 25-54 and 35- 64. The show is loved and accepted both by the industry and her listers. Her 400+ affiliates don't believe your absurdity and the people who buy her books don't, the 10 million+ who subscribe to newsletters being sent out each day don't agree with you either.

Overall, you guys never have nothing constructive or good to add - not ever. About almost everyone who works and produces a broadcast product in the market -- you guys say they stink. Yet, you have no solutions. At least nothing that seems even plausible. What is it? Envy? Anger? Your own frustrations? Here's an idea: Keep up your ridicule and bashing. In fact, step it up. See if, maybe this one time, it will destroy either one's Arbitron numbers and continued success. Want call-in show that takes lots of calls? Then be sure to listen when people guess with it will hit 100.

It seems that on this board, everyone dislikes or outright hates the Young / Komando products, except for their listeners and advertisers. BTW- any of you have the stones to scroll your real names around on this board like you're scrolling his?

Now, back to my beloved Avid system. Nothing else holds a candle.

Well, that's sort of my point… …that Leo Laporte covers the whole range from newbie to expert, and is adept at addressing issues with Macs, Windows, cell phones, video & audio, etc.… …and that while Komando is knowledgeable herself, I've heard her dispense some very questionable advise to those new to computers and learning…

So what if her ratings are good. Again, that does not mean it's a quality radio show. Any number of xenophobic, hate mongering and ill informed ideologue hosts (of which Young belongs to that category) garner a large audience also… …it doesn't mean that it's quality… …it means that people tune in, because it's the only choice (in smaller markets) or they are not educated enough to know there exist better quality shows that are available. If dog food is the only selection on the menu, then you have to eat it, or else go hungry.

You can cite ratings, but fact is, people are tuning radio out in droves, especially young folks, who sport iPods and satellite radio instead… …I know my AM/FM listening has declined drastically since podcasting feeds became prevalent (though a good number of the podcast feeds are radio shows, mostly shows not aired in Phoenix or aired at times I cannot listen).
